Bermuda Cricket Watching

There was circumstantial evidence that this picture was taken in Bermuda, and I'm guessing that the Roof-Sitters are settling for a day of cricket watching.

However from a brief search on t'interweb, I've not tracked down the exact location.

The word "Superette" is new to me, but apparently, it means the same as a Mini-Mart.

Bonus - "Normal colonoscopy - except for that ladybug"

The Little Admiral

No info on the slide, but ...

I believe that this slide/etching is of Admiral Norville Beauchamps. Norville was mentioned in dispatches after the Fifth Battle Of The Nile in 1843, and was promoted to Admiral in 1848. After a glittering career at the Royal Navy Coal Supply Service, he was selected for the 1854 Grand Expedition, who's goal was to pioneer a sailing route from Southampton to Zurich, Switzerland.

The etching shows the short-arse (he was only 4ft 8inches tall) with his flagship HMS Queasy in the background.  Alas, the ship, admiral and all hand were mysteriously lost without trace, just outside Luxembourg.

The Young Sophocles

The slide was marked "donaghue 1858-1903 chicago", which immediately confirmed my theory that this is The Young Sophocles, by John Talbott Donoghue.

Still pretty tedious.

Bonus - Smokers are 60%-80% more likely to be admitted to hospital with Covid-19 and also more likely to die from the disease compared with those who have never smoked, study finds.

Ummmmm ... ... Yes.

I really have no idea on this one.

I can see an elephant, and a (vaguely asiatic) lion, and some mermaid titties (?) and some tentacles.

But as regards as subject ... flub knows.

Bonus - Man disguises boat as a rock.

Bonus 2  - Timelapse of big jigsaw puzzle.

An Outstanding Natural Beauty ... and Mrs Lorimer

No info on this slide, but my diligent research suggest that this could possibly Cromer in Norfolk.

Also in this picture is Mr Lorimer, the man who invented All-Bran Smoothies.

From a box of slides with several of the actually wedding breakfast...and this one of the happy couple heading off for a honeymoon in Scranton, New Jersey. Or somewhere similar.

Apparently, this is Joanne P. Culver's  Ascent. More info here

Lisette and Green Boob Island

To the mapmakers, it was Hampton Isle.

To the locals, it was Green Boob Island.

To Lisette the permanently out of focus... it was a background.

"...and the traffic stopped for the band."

The sight of a marching band in scarlet uniforms and black bearskins immediately made me think of some part of the British Empire / Commonwealth.

However, it appears from the Wivex building that this is somewhere completely different.

But still slightly tedious, to be honest.

Holiday in Dumfries

As some of you know, I've had a short break from work, and headed up to Dumfries for a few days. Schools were back, weather was turning chilly and the lockdown shackles were loosened until the next panic.

Enjoyable, and rather non-touristy. Had a couple of jaunts to the sea shore, including Kirkcudbright on a sunny day.

I may return.

(Note. Image above is almost certainly not of Dumfries and Galloway. Possibly Paphos. )

In The Attic

It won't come as a surprise, but I often have to "correct" an old slide, to cure underexposure / overexposure, dirty slide of colour fade.

Sometimes, the slide needs massive corrections, and sometimes I'm not sure if I prefer the original or the corrected slide.

Like this example.

99 Days Til Christmas

Yes, less that 100 days til Santa arrives. Time to start decorating the hovel, as Mavis Davis here has done.

The magazine that she's reading?  The Little ***** Boy. Doesn't look like Drummer, but... who knows?

Sweetheart Abbey, New Abbey, Dumfries

I'm just back home after a few days away in Dumfries. A charming, quiet, farming area of Scotland, with not many real tourist traps.

So, this slide was an apposite choice. If I'd thought about it, I would have done a Before / After comparison, but ... I didn't.

The Abbey of Dulce Cor, better known as Sweetheart Abbey was a Cistercian monastery founded in 1275.

Lake-Front Properties

Now I'm no expert of  architectural styles of the US States (honestly) but there's something odd and disconcerting about the placement of the "Front Doors" of these lakeside properties.

At the gable end, as part of the porch/balcony structure.

Any Blog-readers know any more?

"Your Lupins Or Your Life"

So, just taking a few days off work.

I've really felt the pressure build up over the past few weeks, it seems like I'm dealing with an incompetent bunch of idiots, and "The Company" relies on me to keep them from ruining everything.  We will see.

So, this dark forbidding wood with a small patch of colour illuminated by teh sun...seems appropriate.

I wonder if HR will see this post an panic...

A Young Michael Gove ??

A friend suggested that this could be a young Michael Gove.

I don't think it is, and it was in a selection of Americans slides from the late 50s / early60s, so it seems impossible, but I don't know for sure.

Bonus - Mesh Game Thing.   I have wasted too much time on this...

Burdine's Sunshine Fashions

After yesterday's deafening response to the Miami Shopping slide (well *I* couldn't hear anything) how could I resist posting another Miami Department Store.

Like Burdine's, and yes, it's been defunct for many a year.

Bonus -  A game of Food and Geography. Where is this dish from?

Monday 6 September 2021

Downtown Miami, Nov 1959.

The only thing on the slide was the Nov 1959 Processing date, but with a little bit of Google-Fu, I am 99.9% Certain that this is Flagler Street in Miami, Fla. (Jackson/Byrons, Lili Dior, Woolworths, etc)

And the car advert for The Big Fisherman does rather confirm the 1959 date.

I Like That Gate

It's just...artfully rustic.

The thatched cottage immediately made me think that this was English, but the house / gate number of 606 seems rather high for a quiet little English village.

So...I have no clue where this is.
