What CAN I say?

Some slides are just irredeemably dull, and this one is.... very dull.

What do I say about it?

...ummmm....

Well, the direction of the spiral staircase?   Generally, proper defensive castles had a spiral in this direction, so that the defenders (upstairs) would have a better sword-fighting stance than any invaders (below). Honest.

Perhaps

Bonus - French King Charles VI suffered from glass delusion which is a delusion in which people believe themselves to be made of glass and thus liable to shatter. He was reported to have wrapped himself in blankets to prevent his buttocks from breaking and had iron rods put into his clothing.

Taking Advantage Of Nature

"A picture is worth a thousand words"

But, "A natural rock is worth 231 stones in a dry-stone wall."

Bonus - The other side of the world.

Bonus 2 - Otherside

"Worst Wife-Swapping Party Ever."

"Tom, I got a set of golf-cuts for the wife."

"Bob, I think you got the better part of that trade, tho' I will miss seeing Marjorie."

Bonus - Spongebob sings Gangster's' Paradise.

The First Snows of Winter

Woke up this morning (link) to heavy rain and wild winds.

However, that soon stopped to be replaced by snow. and wild winds.

This being Derbyshire, it was rather wet snow, and it didn't lie on the ground for long...unlike this slide from ... somewher.

A More Modest Thanksgiving

Here the Wilkie family host Mr & Mrs Kupps, for a more modest Thanksgiving. The centerpiece is a large chicken / small turkey, which appears to have been shot with a 0.357 Naguchi Magnum...leaving a nice cavity for stuffing.

Or maybe that's the Black Spot that Black Friday is named after.

Bonus - Just a Great Dane being a Great Dane.

Thanksgiving Meal Rivals

Today is Thanksgiving in the USA, and you know what that means.

Frank and Wally renew their rivalry over the fate of the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Gridiron Game.

You can see how intense their rivalry is from just looking at their eyes.

What is this thing?

The only info on this slide was "Oaxaca 1984", so ... Mexico, and some sort of market.

But what is the product?  Bread? Leather?  Tortilla?

Any advice would be welcomed.

Bonus - A 1000 years of ancestral connections in the European royal families

Castle Howard 1/4M

Interestingly, this slide was not in the box of Roads Signs From Around Britain slides.

Castle Howard was the venue that masqueraded as Brid... oh.  Why bother. It's not even an interesting fact.

Sun Worshippers

Here in Slideville, this late November Sunday has had quite a few patches of sunshine, and it made me think of hot summer days with hot summer babes in bikinis. Like Madge and Gladys here. They do rather demonstrate the link between Tanning (exposur of skin to the sunshine) and Tanning (the treatment of leather to make it tough and resilient.)

The World Series of Snowball Fights 1975

No info on this slide, other than the date of 1975.

However, the presence of TV cameras from Japan (NHK), America (ABC) and the Canadian mounties makes it very easy to conclude that this is The World Series of Snowball Fights 1975.   The rioting after the event has wisely been forgotten by history.

Bonus - THE ELEPHANT WHO COULD BE A PERSON

The Coney Island Grill (recently closed.)

(Beware, the full size image is larger than normal.)

The Coney Island Grill, and neighbouring shops, which is obviously located in ... St. Petersburg, Miami. From just this slide, I have managed to track down the location, and while the are has been extensively redeveloped, that building is distinctive. There is an image of the place from

I love slides like this - real social history, so I've left this slide as full sized and un-cleaned, so enthusiasts can grab all the small details for themselves.

The slide is undated, but seems to be from the late 1950s, and the diner / grill survived until recently, but closed in March 2021.

Donny's Girl

Today, we have another from the "Boxes of Slides From School Trips at Easter" selection, and this is from Ibiza 1973.

I'm calling this young lady Donna, because, well, I'm not sure of he name, but I think her lapel badge is of Donny Osmond. And there not really much more to say on the subject.

I could speculate that she was a favourite of Mr Peebles, the Teacher / Chaperone / Photographer....but that's just speculation.

Or maybe it's David Cassidy on the badge.

Bonus - No comment required : USA, Republican, Democrat, Covid Vax rates.

The Modern Sec / PA

Though she probably didn't have the title, this working lady of the early sixties probably fulfilled the role of Secretary, Personal Assistant, Typist and Office Manager. And all without the aid of computers and Filofaxes. (Gosh, that makes me sound old as well.)

Bonus - The Toronto Circus Riot of 1855 — the day the clowns picked the wrong Toronto brothel

Ominous Cloudforms

Today's Tedious Tuesday slide is , well, a bit of a cheat.

It's a terrible slide, but I've spent a few seconds darkening the skies, while lightening the buildings.

Now, it's only 43% as tedious as the original .  You're welcome.

Bonus - Had this song refrain stuck in my brain all day.  I’m gonna feed our children non-organic food.

Bonus 2 -  Lake Superior is called "The Lake that Never Gives Up Her Dead." It's cold enough that bodies sink and don't bloat then turn into adipocere  (mummified soap) over time, and in the depths of Lake Superior there really isn't anything to eat the corpses.

A Fish, Tho' Not A Big Fish

Again, it comes as no surprise that I have another "American holding a fish that they caught" slide.

Today, Hank holds a fully grown Wisconsin Piranha.

That may sound dangerous, but the Wisconsin Piranha.only eats cheese, not flesh.

Bonus - Nods sagely.

Saturday 13 November 2021

Ron's Rump

A look back ... to the balmy, nostalgic days of summer. And again, young Ronnie Jameson is pointing his ass towards the camera.

A regular event for Ron, and thus it was no surprised when years later, Ron became a Church Elder.

Bonus - Dead as a Door Nail.

Bonus 2 - Awesome cardboard packing

The Japanese Wedding Meal?

"Oh.... could I have a burger instead?"

Two days after the Japanese Wedding Slide, we have ...this ... from the same box of slides.

The customers seem very American, and not very Wedding-y, and the venue looks quite non-oriental...except for the emergency exit sign in ... Chinese?

So, I'm confused.

Bonus -

Wednesday 10 November 2021

The Japanese Wedding

I was going to say that this is a wedding in Japan, but to my non-expert eye, the gardens don't look very Japan-ish to me. And the venue could be almost anywhere - possibly the Japanese Garden in Stoke-on-Trent. (Venue of the 1937 Tea Ceremony Riots.)

Eight Pairs of Eyes Watching You

It's a doozy of a dull slide.

Yes, there are possibly eights sets of eyes watching you in this picture.  Ninjas? Navy Seals? Bulgarian Panthers?

Probably just an assortment of birds, mice and insects.

Very dull.

Bonus - RIP Dean Stockwell.

A Surfeit of Nostalgia

When I saw this slide, my immediate thought was "Oh God I recognise that."  And for so many things.

For folks of a certain age, there are many things you'll get a kick from. From the bowl of upright cocktail sticks (with cooked sausages or Cheese/Pineapple, I presume) to the twin-tub washing machine.

I wonder what you will see and appreciate...

Fish on a Plank

Apologies for the quality of the slide (tho' not my fault). Sorry that the exposure is iffy, sorry that the horizon is slanted (tho' that might be real), sorry that there's mold growing on the slide.

However, the slide is of historic importance - How many other slides have you seen with the Layton Nailing Fish To A Plank Champions of 1960?  This might be the only record of husband and wife team Veronica and Herbert Basham, who stormed to a famous victory with their innovative "Bulgarian Teacup" technique, which was outlawed in future years.

Bonus - America had "Ugly Laws"

The Aunties and Our Hilda's Wedding

There's nothing to beat a good Yorkshire Wedding, and I'm sure the same Lovely ladies from Batley Townswomen's Guild will turn up for each and every one of them.

Lovely ladies...  Marvelous hats.    classy anoraks.

Bonfire Night - Remember your Furry Friends

Remember remember, the fifth of November.  A day for idiots and numpties to go mad with fireworks. And surprisingly few bonfires.

Remember that (virtually) all pets hate the barrage of bangs...and so d many hoomans. So, please keep your pets indoors, put on some music and give them a bit of extra attention.

Bonus - According to Perspectus Global (who could well be The Institute of Made Up Facts and Surveys) Schoolchildren think Guy Fawkes invented the fork. Cue the inevitable Dayley Mayle outrage.

Bonus 2 - via Reddit

National Motorway Lighting Day

The simple fact is that 99.996% of UK citizens do not give a second thought about Motorway Overhead Lighting (except when it goes wrong). And that's a shame.  It makes motorways safer and lampposts make an important contribution to a Carbon-Free economy.

And that's the thinking behind National Motorway Lighting Day. "Celebrate The Upright."

You can find out more at www.National-Motorway-Lighting-Day.org.uk

The Colours of Autumn

Autumn, the time of mellow fruitfulness. Or something.

Lovely colour of foliage, and the fun of shuffling through fallen leaves.

But if you call it "Fall"... no,you are wrong.

Bonus - Ghost Fashion

Bonus 2 - Advertising done right.

Mullaly's Milk Moving Machinery

No info on this slide, as usual, so I'm presuming that this is a prototype version of Mullaly's Milk Moving Machinery.

This was Rhodesia's second most popular milk tanker filling mechanism, but was actually developed in Egypt, within sight of the Aswan Dam.

There, that's something you didn't know.
