Batavische Republik 1801

People make slides of the oddest things.

Like a series of slides of military uniforms of the Napoleonic Era, such as this.

Obviously, this is the Batavian Republic's Criminal Punishment Brigade, an earlier version of the fictional Dirty Dozen.  The brigade was made up of Murderers, Highwaymen, Pirates, embezzlers, poisoners, jay-walkers, arsonists, Ponzi Scheme managers, tax-avoiders, sodomites, speeders, weedheads, vampires and politicians.

Nice.

The Plate .... of DEATH

In Yemeni culture, this plate was known as A Piastra di Latte-Bottiglie Pelose , which translates as The Plate Of Death.

It was given to Sultan Barney as a wedding gift, and caused the death of 3,000 of his finest tax accountants.

Bonus - Congratulations to the English Football Team, beating Germany in a competitive match for the first time since ... oh, some forgotten competition.

Just Married

So much nostalgia here, with the usual frustrating lack of information.

I'm no expert of bridal fashions, but that does shout early sixties to me.

White tuxedo for the groom (tacky?) and a plain buzz-cut haircut sort of matches up.

Photographer with old-fashioned flash-bulb camera... yeah !

But, the name above the church door - "Taylor Memorial Baptist Church, should help the research Indeed, Google turns up three of them in USA...but none look like this. Damn.

Milton Abbot

Milton Abbot. You may know it as a small village in Devon, but the name will be recycled in my forthcoming novel. "A Sprinkling of Pepper".

It's the story of a series of bafflingly grotesque murders, where the victims are turned inside-out, being investigated by Professional Potato Carver and Amateur Detective Dr Milton Abbot. Aided by his sidekicks Marston Montgomery and Findo Gask, he tracks down the bizarre truth behind the murders. (Spoiler Alert - Baptists and Nectar Cards).

I'm hoping it will be optioned by Netflix before I've even written it.

Six Month To / From Christmas

Yes, scarily, we're past the summer solstice, and Christmas Day is only six months off.

So, lets celebrate with this snowy scene, apparently of a thatched cottage called Hollyhocks (if I can make out the blurred detail.)

Alas, I have been unable to track down where this cottage is / was. Hollyhocks and Thatched Cottage produced a metric shit-ton of hits.

Bonus - Morse code is officially considered obsolete and was removed as an international standard for communication in 1999. The French Navy's last Morse message read; "Calling all. This is our last cry before our eternal silence."

Overgrown Bush Trimmed by Loving Husband

Alf Thompson loves tending that bush, and ..

Where's all that sniggering coming from?

What's so funny ? It's just a picture of Alf, beavering away a...

Oh come on. Stop giggling.

The Less Visited Sites of Idaho

Mention Idaho to most folk, and a majority will say "       What?", and some will thinks of a fairly dull state.

However, if you know where to look, you can find marvels such as this. It's "Burt Coleman's Retreat" built by Burt in the 1930's using the proceeds of his moonshining business.

You'll probably recognise the design as being a scale model of the Schönbrunn Palace, in Vienna. Unfortunately, Burt chose to scale it by 93% meaning that it was actually more trouble that it was worth. So, despite using cheap labour from the post-Wall St Crash depression, Burt went bust just before completion.

Caution

On first seeing this faded Ektachrome slide, I thought "Definite Tedious Tuesday slide."

However, reducing it to monochrome, and straightening up the horizontal... it's rather a striking composition. I like it.

I believe that this is of an airport, and the covered walkways that existed before the modern articulated, 20ft above the ground ones.

Bonus - The reason why we view neanderthals as hunched over and degenerate is that the first skeleton to be found was arthritic.

A. Rose amongst ... Roses.

A visual pun, I suppose.

Mrs Audrey Rose, tending her climbing roses.

Not a funny pun, but what do you expect on the longest day of 2021.

Bonus - Video house viewings - the strange case of 8800 Blue Lick Road, Louisville Kentucky, and if interested....the background.

The Peasant and The Pickle

I really haven't a clue about this one.

The woman, let's call her Olga, has the look of Russian Peasant Chic about her.

The boy, let's call him Yvgeny, seems to be carrying a giant pickled gherkin.

The background story - You tell me !

Carina's Birthday

Yes, today is Carina's XXth birthday, and I'm glad to see that someone's baked her a cake.

( NB : I can't guarantee that the girl in the photo is the the Carina I'm think of.)

Bonus - Carina shares her birthday with Barry Manilow, Ken Livingston, Jello Biafra and Beryl Reid.   Nice.

Bonus 2 - This website will self destruct if no-one visits it.

Thermos Flask or Camping Stove ???

It could be any small carpark in England (in 1978), and these folks are enjoying a refreshing cup of tea.

Tea?  Of course. It has to be tea. Don't let those coffee mugs confuse you, these folks are definitely tea-drinkers.

But the big question is, did they bring their tea in a Thermos flask, or did they fire up the Camping Gas stove for the best possible fresh brew?

Enquiring minds need to know.

Bonus - The Atlas Of Taste.

...and the crowd don't go wild!

Yes, the attendees of the Eastbourne Retired Postmen and Post Office Employee Gala Fun Day were rather bemused by "Il Bootleg Bootleg Beatles".

Few of them realised that they were witnessing the birth of Post-Modernism, with an Italian Language Tribute Band, honouring the work of a Tribute Band to the Fab Four.

Bonus -     162 years ago today, the shooting of a pig sparked a war between USA and UK. Local commanding officers on both sides had been given essentially the same orders: defend yourselves, but absolutely do not fire the first shot.  The dispute was resolved by the intervention of Germany.

Chaudet's Cupid

You don't need me to tell you that this is by Antoine-Denis Chaudet. It's obvious from his dexterous wielding of a Dremel multi-tool.

Also, I know that you know that this is his Cupid (I said that in the post title), which was completed posthumously by Pierre Cartellier in 1817.

Looks like Cupid is about to fart

Bonus - Great White Sharks have never been observed mating and it's unknown where, how or when they do it.

Bonus 2 - Seen on a bench in Margate.

Snog - Marry - Dismember - Game #568

Time for another game of your favourite ...ummm... game. Snog / Marry / Dismember, and this time, it's for the ladies and non-binary funsters out there.

Have a look at the slide, and the bios, and decide - Who would you Snog for the night, who would you Marry with a view to a family, and who would you poison with bleach and Dismember with a chainsaw?  From the left,

Harold - a 64-year-old credit assessor from Nebraska, who enjoys alcoholism.

Ingmar - a 76-year old retired potato stuffer from Maryland, who enjoys covering his body in mayonaise

Ludwig - a 32-year old school janitor from Akron, who enjoys listening to recordings of serial killers' confessions.

Bonus - I got nuthin'

The Lincoln Memorial (with fungus)

Another example of Photography Gone Wrong. In this case, a very standard picture of the Lincoln Memorial has been stored in a warm, humid location, and ... fungus.

I do hope the fungus is non-hazardous.

But, artistically...I like it.

Bonus - L Ron Hubbard believed that tomatoes feel pain and that - if it is quiet enough - you can hear them scream when they are sliced.

Dull, dull, DULL!

Why, why why ( Delilah).

Why do photographers take and keep utterly tedious slides like this?

Not even a bit of experimenting with the arty farty settings can help it.

Under Surveillance

I love this image.

It's probably a mis-processed slide, or a partial image at the end of a film, incorrectly processed, but...I don't care. It's a great images. Especially when you notice "The Watcher".

Bonus - Nnnooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!

Little Pocohontas

No.

In case you're wondering, the black boarder around this image is not an In Memorium / recently deceased indicator. I have no idea if this little cutie is still around, or gone off to the happy hunting grounds.

Instead, it's a recognition that this image was a Half Frame 35mm slide. A nice idea, and I did have a Olympus Pen-EE. I wonder what happened to that....

Bonus - I was going to describe this image differently, but I was slightly surprised to learn that squaw can be an offensive term. To some folk. Perhaps. Perhaps incorrectly.

Bonus 2 - Henry de Bohun, a brave knight who thought he could kill Robert the Bruce on the open field because the King of Scots was armed only with an axe. Robert regretted the incident because he broke his favorite axe splitting Henry's head.

The Welcome Committee

Anyone new who moves into Namibia Crescent, Fylde is almost guaranteed to be visited by The Welcome Committee within 24 hours arrival.

They'll greet you with a stale malt loaf, and useful information on Bin day, where you can park, the start of whelking season, what colour of curtains are permitted, and why you should avoid Number 78 during September.

The committee are Doris Danning (left) and Edna Mengele (middle, and no relation), and on the right is a poltergeist.

"Damn, I'm Rock Hard"

" I wonder if I can hide it with....uh. I guess not."

Actually, the slide is labelled "1986 06 Jerichau NY Carlsberg", which naturally leads to the Ny Carlsberg museum, but it appears that this is actually Slaven now at the Brandts.

Bonus - The mysterious worldwide epidemic of Encephalitis lethargica. The disease attacks the brain, leaving some victims in a statue-like condition, speechless and motionless. Between 1915 and 1926, 500,000 dead or incapacitated from it. It disappeared as mysteriously as it came in to the world.
