That was the tradition in Doncaster.
There was always a risk that the bride would say "I Don't" at the critical point. At which point, a pre-prepared Spare would be wheeled in, and after a quick move of the veil, the back-up would step up.
In this slide Gladys Harper (on the left) got cold feet, and Mavis Farnsworth (with the veil) stepped into the breach.
These reserve brides were usually on a 6-month contract, after which they would be on their way out....with a hefty cheque, or 60 head of sheep...depending upon contractual terms.
