Gorillas in the Abstract

Now this one bugs me.

I've just got a fresh shipment of "zoo" shots, and there's quite a few like the one above. TYpical 50's and 60's aspirational zoo - and to many it sure looks interesting.

But what does the gorilla think of his enclosure? Even if he was born in captivity, he's got a body built for climbing, exploring and tree life. Did you know that every night, a gorilla in the wild builds a new nest from leaves and branches?

This little chap has a cold, bare, hard concrete "designer" compound. Seems to have nowhere to climb, or dig, or nest. I'm sure the humans will appreciate it...nowhere for the gorilla to hide, so he's always on view.     Not much of a life really.
