Hallowe'en Gore

Curious.   Americans Love Halloween.  Most of my Slides are American.

But, I couldn't find any Hallowe'en slides to share with you. So, lets dip into the "Operation Selection", and witness a bloody attempt to hide a large ball bearing side a body.

Bonus - And while I'm posting items of dubious taste...

Parade Time...oops

The last few batches of slides have featured a lot of Parades. Either 1960's America featured a LOT of parades... (Celebrating another week without getting drafted ? Another week closer to landing on the moon?)  ...or they were such a rarity that EVERYONE turned out for them, and took photo's to educate the grandkids.

Either way, one staple was having pretty girls to tempt the dads in the audience. And this parade was no different - a gaggle of baton-twirling majorettes in gold-sequin leotards. T'is a pity that Kathy needed more practise...

Yes, The Jefferson's Are Back

Back from their holidays, and glorious in Technicolor Black n White.

But who's the dame on the right?    That's Maude's sister Mildred.

Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo

As you see. it's an exciting time, as hordes of spectators await the final weigh-in at the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.

And it's more than just pride at stake. The  signs seem to suggested "All Edible Fish (something) Sixth District Tuberculosis Hospital."  Which is nice.

Bonus - The story of one girls obsessive quest for cake.

Umm....   Look, A Tower.

And a Park.  Gosh, isn't that...very....ahhh.....boring.

Derby City Zoo

You're probably unaware that Derby even had a zoo, but it did. A very special zoo, to be honest, and it just wasn't a success. Derby's specialty was being the worlds first autopsy zoo. Whenever an exhibit at another zoo died, Derby stepped in and offered an autopsy service, with the animal pelt being restuffed, and set up as an exhibit.

For example, here we have Oggie (ex London Zoo) and Trevor (ex Dundee Wildlife Park) the non-breeding pair of Polar Bears.

With hindsight, the failure of the zoo after just two years shouldn't have been a surprise, especially after a hot summer.   Predictably, the Petting Zoo was a total flop.

Bonus - Breakfast Nightmares.   Damn, it's gone now.

Into The Pit Of Doom

Well, not so much "Doom" as "Lethargic and Drugged Reptiles".  Strange things, these 1960's tourist attractions.

Consuelo and Nadine

...share an intimate dinner for two, but are surprised by a Paparazzo!

Consuelo loves stealing chips, which she dunks in chamomile tea.

Nadine, despite being half-cut, is ready to stab anyone who approached.

Fashion notes : Backless LBDs are in. Lacy wrist-cuffs are on their way out.

Bonus : WTF and WOW !

Hollings Fashion Show - The "Men"

Time for some Fashion Show Slides from 1988. Again.

This time, rather than the pretty girls of most of the shots, here we must have the efforts of Class 6F, who drew the short straw of Male Club-Wear. This single shot tells us so much about the fashion industry. In short The Fashion Industry...

  • Doesn't like designing for men,
  • Thinks men are suggestible idiots
  • Male models are preening self-important cocks
  • Male catwalk models need to be seriously drunk to work and/or
  • Whistles and bumbags are no substitute for talent.

Bonus : The Oatmeal nails it again.

Henry Barclay

Mr Henry Barclay, General Secretary of the East Kansas Chamber of Commerce, and one of the finest Orthodontists that West Point ever produced.

Henry is married to Getrude (who took this picture) and father to Mildred, Wilfred, Ogdred and Bingo.  Some day, the real story behind Bingo Barclay might be told, but not today.

USS Ranger

Heavens ! It's Tedious Tuesday once again.

(Searches thru' collection.)

Ah yes.   Far from being a good shot, it's still interesting to see what I can find out about a subject, and from a little digging, I suspect this is the USS Ranger.

Some info here, or of course here.  And...ooohhh....it could be all yours if you have space in a museum !

Bonus - Melancholy today, so how about Bjork's version of Gloomy Sunday (The Hungarian Suicide Song.)

Meanwhile, At Mount Doom

The careful use of a Tripod and Self-Timer means that the Fellowship have captured their final moment of success.

From the left, we have Smeegle, Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Colin ready to throw the ring into the Pond of Doom. Of course, after a major falling out regarding the film right, Colin's part of the tale was written out, and he ended up as a Night Watchman at Frodo's castle.

Baywatch - 1961

A fine Indian Summer day here in slide-ville, spoiled only by a police helicopter announcing a missing 10-year old girl. <>

So,  a final (?) summer shot from the archives - and I presume it's from family trip to an American Watery Theme Park.  A chance for the (not very) extensive crowds to acknowledge the water-ski display team and ...umm...clown.

Bonus - Austrailians.  Strange bunch. Disturbing sexy pie adverts. (Not a phrase I often type.)

Almost The Cover-Girls

Spent part of today working on the 2011 Slide Guy Calendar *, and these two delightful ladies very nearly made the shortlist for the cover. As it is, it's been bloody tricky to whittle the possibles list down to the current 26, so I've given up and will try again tomorrow.

But, It was tempting to choose Nora and Doris as the March image (Page 3, naturally) until I realised that they may well be two gents in a Witness Protection Programme.  Someone may recognise them.

Bonus : So...who wants a calendar?      *  Every year I round up 13 of the best slide images (usually ones never seen on the blog) and get a wall calendar printed.  Always causes confusion in offices, as people ask "That weird bloke...is he..umm...a relative?"

Bonus 2 : A while since I last embedded sumfink

The Monument

From downtown Buenos Aires, this is The Monument to The Brave Torturers. Remembering the contribution they've made to peace and security. The gleaming white material is made from the bleached bones of the spies, subversives and weirdos.  Nice.

Snakes Alive

Nope.  A very dead rattler. Apologies for the faded photo, bu that's the problem with Ektachrome, and similar E6 slide films.
The basic message of this slide is... snakes may develop a tolerance for poison, but there's no tolerance for a beheading.

Traditional Location

I can only hope that the photographer involved in this hideously boring shot was scouting for locations for a up-coming (in the Seventies) episode of Dr Who. Why else would someone take it ??

EDIT : Thanks to K9teen : Apparently, this quarry was used in the story Daleks Invade Another Damned Quarry from series 17½. In fact, you may be interested in the attached small shot...  (Lies, all lies.)

Bonus : Lee Evans is like Norman Wisdom on Acid.     NSFW / NSFK

In A Corner of a French Field...

Is a Fuel Pump that will forever be part of "Mobil".

How do I know it it's in France?  An educated guess based upon the text on the face of the pump.

Fixed Grins

Never before has "Smile for the camera" been more awkward. The Jefferson sisters were very competitive when it came to men (or corn on the cob, if it came to that) and the moment this photo was taken, the girls were back to staring daggers at one another.

Holiday in The Enemy Camp

From a set of slides marked Russia 1985, but  processed in USA. So, looks like some brave American managed to visit The Evil Empire before the Cold War thawed out. What's the betting that they were closely monitored.

Bonus - related to that. Did Vladimir Putin meet Ronald Reagan as an undercover KGB man?

Bark !

Plain and Simple.   And abstract.

Bonus 1 - The Crowning Moment of Awesome. The Norton Project. Settle down with a hot cup of coffee, and have your faith in humanity restored.

Bonus 2 Bush and Blair. Follow the leader

Bonus 3 - Deep within the carnival's house of mirrors, a balloon sculpture that looks exactly like Judy from Lost in Space forces clumps of cold sauerkraut into a hollow magic 8-Ball and gives it to Smokey the Bear, presently trapped in a sensory deprivation tank during the tremors of a mild earthquake. Yeah

Autumn Arrives !!

(Or if you're 'Merkin, Fall Arrives.)

Woke up this morning to a misty scene, with tree's turning brown and leaves going crinkly. I was tempted to take the family out for  a photo (until I realised I had no family. ) Still, this family unit seems similarly thrilled by the season.

Lightweight Camping

Fergus and Francine Farkle, enjoying the delights of rural Kentucky.  OK, not really lightweight camping....Fergus found an ex-army tent, and I'm with him: that looks far more comfortable than some minuscule nylon coffin.  Go Fergus !!
