How Rare! The Bronx Zoo

 

As I have said, 2,318 times, it's weird the things that you find in a box of slides.  Like a photograph of a photograph.

Tonight, my plan of an evening of political discourse, obscene discussions and a moderate intake of alcohol was thwarted by Mr H heading off to visit Dublin Zoo.  So, here's a  picture of Laurance Rockefeller, Fairfield Osborn, Capt. Jean Delacour, Allyn Jennings, and Raymond Ditmars holding a baby chimpanzee, sitting at a table having tea at the Bronx Zoo in New York. From a 1941 edition of Vogue.

42nd and Lexington

 

Unlabelled, but almost unmistakeable.

That's the Chrysler Building. 

The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco skyscraper on the East Side of Manhattan in New York City, at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. At 1,046 ft (319 m), it is the tallest brick building in the world with a steel framework, and it was the world's tallest building for 11 months after its completion in 1930. As of 2019, the Chrysler is the 12th-tallest building in the city, tied with The New York Times Building.

This was an odd slide. Not because it was a MonoChrome Slide (Agfa used to make such film) but because this was a set of B+W Negatives, mounted in a 35mm slide mount.

I just thought about how political the labelling of blog-posts could be.

This one could have been "Last View of the Homeland as Common Sense Leaves America"

or, it could be "At Last. First sight of the Land Of The Free still welcomes Poor and Huddled Masses"

In fact, this slide was labelled "USA Statue of Liberty, 1970".  Which seems rather...humdrum.

Bonus 2 - Yesterday it was so cold out that I took a man into my home out of the kindness of my heart. In hindsight, this was a very bad idea. Anyway, I felt so sorry for him, the poor thing was standing stiff and frozen out in the cold, but this morning he had just vanished. Not a word... not even a goodbye or thank you for sheltering him.

The last straw? When I realized he had peed all over the floor!! That's the "thank you" I get for being nice to strangers that can't help themselves...

I am posting this so you all can watch out for people like this. He is heavyset, wearing nothing but a scarf, he has a pointy nose, two black eyes, and his arms are very very skinny almost like sticks. Don't bring people like this into your home!! What a mess he made on my floor...

I had always just presumed that Steam Engine and Traction Engine preservation was a peculiarly British thing - the preserve of gruff old Yorkshire men and retired whippet breeders. However, this box of slides showed that America has these interests as well. 

This engine seems to be called after Lynn L Lagworthy, of Alfred, New York. The notice at the bottom leads to  Williams Grove Steam Engine Association, which is still going ! (I presume that WGSEA = WGHSEA.

A Trip To Niagara

 

Not to be confused with A Trip To Nicaragua. Back then, Nicaragua was an angry violent country, riven by political infighting and corruption, and America was a well respected oasis of peace in a troubled world. Oh how things have changed.

However, then as now, one of the annoyances of a trip to a Tourist Hotspot is the annoying stranger who always appears in the photo... tho' in this case, daddy photographer may just be capturing her shapely arse.

Now, technically this should be called a bad photograph. The exposure rather too contrasty, and the Ektachrome slide had deteriorated and colour-shifted over the years.

But, it's made this slide (unretouched or corrected) quite like an old Cyanotype image. And I like it.

Bonus - What I don't really like, or at least, it makes me uneasy, is this.

He may have been under the protection of the FBI Witness Protection Program, but Johnny The Squealer did like to meet up with some old colleagues.

So, on went his girdle, pancake make-up and falsies, and ta-da... Margueritte Dumas !

Cracking picture.   Actually, an early 35mm slide (1937?) mounted in a slide frame for some reason.

But, a cracking slide of real life.  Boulevard Cleaners, based at 89 Mineola Boulevard, Mineola, New York.

And that address still exists. No longer a cleaners, it's now Britt's Firearms.  I suppose I could ponder the social implications of that...but that's too obvious.
