There are probably hundreds of tourists who have told friends and neighbours that they really wish they had this rather that Tesco or Waitrose.
Those tourists are, of course, lying. A quick dose of typhoid or cholera, and they'd be screaming for safe, reliable Sainsburys.

MrHappy, one of the blog's regular watchers, told me that there haven't been enough funny looking kids on the blog recently, and you know what, he's probably right.
So, to correct that, have this slightly creepy shot of some Asian kids who seem genuine;y overjoyed to be seen and photographed. I'm not sure who, when, where or why, but I think that's some sort of zoo enclosure in the background.

One of the intriguing parts of this hobby (well, intriguing to me) is that a single slide can lead to a bit of serious Googling.For example, in a bunch of slides covering America and some unidentified Far East country, this slide cropped up, and I thought..."I wonder what the Friends of China Club was, and where was it.
Googling revealed that it was in Taiwan, and may have been owned by Madame Chiang, and used for spying on Westerners.

Today's interesting word - Jeepney
As you're an intelligent bunch of web surfers (heck...you found this bog) you're probably well spoken, erudite and literate. You may well have encountered the word Jeepney, and may have seen one on your trip to the Far east.
On the other hand...you might not. In that case, Jeepneys are the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines. They were originally made from US military jeeps left over from World War II and are well known for their flamboyant decoration and crowded seating. They have also become a symbol of Philippine culture.
See, this blog is educational as well as slightly random.

Or at least that's my interpretation. Anyway, enough details in the pic to amuse or intrigue you. The fin-tastic cars, with whitewall tyres. The mysterious wisps of steam / cloud / spray just beyond the car park. The suspicious number of cars parked at some sort of a viewpoint...despite the crap weather.
Most curious of all, the lady in the back of the official (police?) car - suspect, informant or boss? Who knows? Can anyone read the working on teh car door?

Back in the 60's, I guess world travel was still a bit of a novelty, I can image a couple inviting the neighbours round for a Cheese and Wine party, and rounding off the evening with a quick slide show of where they'd just been.
For Marv and Suzy, their trip to Kuala Lipis with the (Oregon State Comission on Mining Technology) must have impressed their neighbours. To think, none of them would even be able to find Kuala Lipis on an Atlas !
