Filling Station

 

One of those slides that just appears with nowt but a date (June 1985), but it intrigues me. So....what and where?

In case it's of interest, he'smy thought process.

In the background - "Barley Brewery". That leads to a site saying it's defunct...but saying it was in the village of Barley, and giving a postcode.

So, then it's easy to Google, and see that 38 years later, there's still a Fox and Hounds pub there.   And, Street view shows that nothing much has changed. 

Oh, and kids.... the petrol station on the left, in 1985. That's £1.65 per Gallon.

Bonus - Florida man whose arm was ripped off by 10-foot gator, was peeing in pond because bar line was too long.

Another edition of the Interweb's Least Satisfying Quiz.  Where the heck are we for this slide?

OK. It's too easy, and Google Streetview shows few changes, apart from some tree removal.

"The Church" Restaurant and "The Belfry"

 

Yes, another of those Then and Now pairs.

Again, there was no info written on the slide, so where do you start in trying to search for a location. Luckily, I iz a genius, and in a mere 76 hours, I'd tracked the location down.

The Church restaurant has since closed, but it was at 70 Brunswick Street, Stratford, Ontario. 

Thanks to Google Streetview, I can confirm that the building looks very VERY similar in 2020.

Chicago - revisited

I love it when there's something written on a slide. In this case "Aug 17 1952, Isobelle, Ola (?), Mabel, Bill and Vera front of 7439 St. Lawrence".  Damn. 70 years and 12 days ago.

It also gives me a chance to go hunting on Google to figure out which State and/or City this was.

And lo and behold - it's 7439 S St Lawrence Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60619, USA.  Thanks to, Google Streetview, we even have a picture of the property.   How cool is that ?

You'll know the story by now. A rather interesting slide, but with no date, location or information.

It certainly looks like it's been taken in France,  but can you work out exactly where?

Clues a-plenty from the signposts, but...it's not always as easy as you expect.

I know it's only been a couple of days since I posted a Now & Then slide pair, but...it's just happened. 

This 1988 slide caught the eye, perhaps due to the "Ukrainian Flag" colours painting of the mooring posts. Probably not in anticipation of Russia's idiotic invasion, but who knows.

Only info on the slide was "Summer 1988, Italy", but using only my genius and a small tin of sweetcorn, I identified this as being Riva del Garda, on Lake Garda.

And Google Streetview provided a similar view from 2014

1986 via Kodachrome Slide

 Another old slide with limited info (1986 datestamp), and a desire to dig and figure out where it was/is.

I won't tell you all the steps I made, but after a couple of minutes, I discovered it was Annapolis in Maryland. Again.

Google furnished me with a very similar view from 35 years later.

Nice.

Now, this is the sort of slide that I like. A nice little slice of America, with no info. 

So, a chance to look around for clues, and work out where it is, and ...ideally, what it looks like now. (Thanks to Google Streetview.)

So the result is that this is Chester in Vermont.  And I reckon that it's around 1976.

Nothing much has changed.

Bonus - That station makes me think of The Station Agent...well worth a watch.

An undated slide, but circumstantial evidence suggests it dates from early 1980's. And, unsurprisingly, the Tavern hasn't changed much in the intervening 35 odd years. (A screengrab from Google, and there are a selection of years images.)

The Correct Use of the Apostrophe

 

While I ain't no Grammar Nazi, I do appreciate the correct use of punctuation. And full marks for the owners of the Mechanics' Building for demonstrating that this isn't a building for just one mechanic.

No info on the slide, but the interesting combination of sunshine, Morris Minor and "Drug Store"mae me think of Bermuda....and Yes. I was correct.
