The Escarpment

 

An escarpment is a steep slope or long cliff that forms as a result of faulting or erosion and separates two relatively level areas having different elevations.

The terms scarp and scarp face are often used interchangeably with escarpment. Some sources differentiate the two terms, with escarpment referring to the margin between two landforms, and scarp referring to a cliff or a steep slope. In this usage an escarpment is a ridge which has a gentle slope on one side and a steep scarp on the other side.

Garden of the Gods, Colorado

 

On the slide is writ "Apr 63, Garden of the Gods, Colorado", and from that, I can surmise...just about everything.

The Garden of the Gods does look like a gorgeous area, but ... unto the pandemic is over, I suspect that most of USA will be off-limits for us brits.

An (Un)Natural Arch

 

Although the slide was unlabelled, I believe that this may be the road through Red Canyon, in the Dixie National Forest, un Utah.

Some stock picture libraries label this as a Natural Arch, but ...I think not. Anyone know for sure?

The Conglomerate of Cushendun

 

Not the name of one of the minor princes in Game Of Thrones, this refers to the geological material,  clastic sedimentary rock that is composed of a substantial fraction of rounded to subangular gravel-size clasts. In this case, it's specifically the outcrop near Cushendun, in Northern Ireland.

Actually, it is reported that Cushendun Caves was used as a filming location for Game Of Thrones. Interesting.

Thus it was written, and yeah, Googling for that phrase does produce similar images.

A closer match is gained from Sea Arch, Ballintoy, but even that doesn't match the image exactly.

I'm guessing that erosion and weathering has altered the shape significantly.

Impressive geology.

No info on the slide, and it's not jogging any memories from me, so I'll just label it as Badlands.

The Folkestone Glacier

Mr & Mrs Ernest Peabody, of Tunbridge Wells dice with death by sitting at the head of the Folkestone Glacier.

Now, obviously, this isn't a real glacier, but it was the common name of a "White Cliffs" theme park attraction just outside Folkestone.  It saved decent people from the trouble of actually visiting the real White Cliffs, with its attendant drug addict problem.

The theme park closed in 1971, after the UK Decimalisation Crisis.

It seems like an easy call to say that this is Grand Canyon, even with no info on the slide.

However, there are several other site in America which it could be.

Some detailed research actually reveals that this is Yavapai Point, Grand Canyon National Park.  Sometime intuition proves correct.

I didn't know that there were any in France.
