I'm Back

 

Dam!

Well, clearly my week away attempting mediate between Trump and Iran was fruitless, so I'm back. And how better to mark that with this mysterious, unlabelled slide.

However ... This is a view of the Hoover Dam, a concrete arch dam located on the border between Arizona and Nevada.The dam, constructed between 1930 and 1936, impounds the Colorado River to form Lake Mead, one of the largest artificial lakes in the world.The structure is 726 feet (221 meters) high and 1,244 feet (379 meters) long, serving purposes such as flood control, hydroelectric power generation, and agricultural irrigation.

The Disappearing Road

 

Sometime a slide attracts me just because it's gorgeous. 

Like this one, marked only as "Old Creek".  To me, it looks like Arizona...and sure enough, there's an Oak Creek, near to Sedona.  Anyone recognise this road? (That might be Capitol Butte on the horizon.)

In the same box of slides as Tuesday's brital architecture building was this slide...and it looks like a different view of the same location.

And, that mountain profile looks familiar.

So, with a little digging, I'm convinced that this is The Loews Hotel in Tucson, Arizone.

And yes, there are a lot of similar images of the Salt River Canyon on the interweb. For Example.

To me, it's reminiscent of the area around Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

Leap Year Superstitions

The leap year - the odd gift of  astrophysics to the calendar - inspires some odd traditions around the world.  Most famously, is the tradition of ladies being allowed to propose to young men...which is why I'm posting this from a secure bunker in.... a remote location.

But, in Arizona, it is the custom to weld a young suckling pig to a stretcher, ready for a night of merriment and debauchery.

A family member has bought a house in Filby, Norfolk, so I thought I'd try to find a suitable slide to illustrate the scenery. This one, fits the bill.

Look at the horizon - flat.    Very very flat.   That's what you can expect in Norfolk.  (And will no massive canyon to look at either.
