Meanwhile, in Peru

...Mrs Elvira Bockstein heads off for her daily job, avoiding the micturating pooch, and heading towards The Prolapsed Rectum, for lunch with the other Ladies Who Lunch.

Saint Rose of Lima

For a change, a slide with some information. No date, but it seems like some doctor's scrawl.  Deciphering it :

"The mortal remains of Saint Rose of Lima in the Church of Santo Domingo. First saint of the Americas"

Amongst the things she is Patron Saint of :  embroiderers; sewing lace; gardeners; florists; people ridiculed or misunderstood for their piety; for the resolution of family quarrels; against vanity; Wiki

Bonus - Actually, that would appear to be The Lemon tree of Santa Rosa de Lima

Bonus 2 - I’m never donating blood again; it’s all questions...

Like...

...Where did you get it from?

...Why are you carrying it in a bucket?

Fruit Meringue as Headwear

So, apparently, in the remote Watzachapl Region of Peru, it's is the fashion for mothers to bake meringues and fill them with fruits and berries for their daughters to were on the Fest Day of Saint Celia.

Who Knew?

Banco de Los Andes

Where in the world?
Actually, "Banco de Los Andes" is a big giveaway, and the  bus labelled as "Cusco" seems to seal the deal.

Norwich.

Bonus - Naughty, but it makes me laugh.

Where did you get that hat?

Thus was in a bunch of Peruvian Slides, so I'd like to think that these are the local coca leaves / cocaine sellers, but it could just as easily be Alstroemeria sellers.

Speaking of which,  I could do with some fine, Columbian ... coffee.

Bonus - Eating a piece of cheese is perfectly acceptable, but if you shove a handful of grated cheese in your mouth people look at you like you are a psychopath.

Llama Blanket Bingo

In the Peruvian village of Santa Ricardo de Tromboni, there is a strange custom. Every two years, the villagers layout their hand-knitted blankets in a field, then introduce a herd of llamas, pre-fed on chocolate eclairs.

Eventually, nature takes its course, and a llama poops on a blanket.  The owner of that cacca-blessed blanket will be Mayor of the village for the next two years.

I presume a similar thorough process can be blamed for Boris Johnson's appointment.

Look To The Skies

Praise Be for little old ladies who take once-in-a-lifetime voyag
es through South America, take pictures of just about anything, then write detailed descriptions of what they saw onto each individual slide.

Or Praise Be to Edith for short.

In this case :

Machu Pichu Sun Dial Knowledge of astronomy was very advanced. Incas had a lunar calendar of 12 months. It is not known exactly how they operated the sun clocks.

OK.

Grumpy Gran

Macchu Pichu.

Heck.

Mrs Brady (and old lady) isn't happy.

The Native porters have carried her up the final 10,000 ft from the car park, and she's not happy.  Call this a tourist attraction?   There's not even a Primark to go shopping in.!

Just Some Abandoned Buildings...

Kids. Sheesh.

That's not just some abandoned buildings. That's Machu Picchu.

Bonus - After 12 years of torture in a Hawaiian circus , Tyke the elephant finally managed to escape during a live performance in August of 94. Injuring staff on her way out, police shot her 86 times , in the street which eventually killed her. The look in her eyes tells a thousand stories...

We're Not In Norfolk Any More

As usual, no info on the actual slide, but circumstantial evidence makes me think Peru.

Also, I don't speak Spanish, but I think I can translate "Hospital Directo".

Bonus - After Reagan watched the movie WarGames he asked “Could something like this really happen?” to his chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a week later the general returned and said “Mr. president, the problem is much worse than you think.”

Bonus 2 - Not hearing crunch in a crunchy food is mostly okay, but hearing a crunch in a non-crunchy food is terrifying.

The Basket-Smugglers

Lake Titicaca is the home to Los Basquitas, a ruthless band of basket-smugglers. This fabled band have been smuggling reed baskets from Bolivia to Peru for almost two-hundred years.

(Actually, there was a period in the 1960's when baskets were smuggled from Peru to Bolivia, thanks to a sudden revaluation of the peso.)

I'll Huff and I'll Puff...

or maybe the start of the Hippy Crack epidemic.

However, I suspect this is a photo from Peru, where the extreme altitudes can lead to health problems - especially for non-locals. This looks like a low-tech oxygen enrichment treatment.

Machu Picchu

One of the stock tourists pictures of the interweb. Sitting, overlooking Machu Picchu.

Still, many people believe the old "Found by Hiram Bingham" story, despite it being rubbish.

More Oxygen, Madam?

In a mixed box of slides, I found some slides of Machu Picchu, and this one. It's a guess, but I reckon this slide is from a related Andes-related transport.

Or maybe some professional Glue-Huffing offer from British Rail.

Bonus - The Story of Japan

So There I Was....

Half way up a ladder, a ham and lychee sandwich in one hand, and a leather beer-can cover in the other, when old Bert Johansen shouts out "Say Cheese For The Camera".

It was all I could do to turn half around, and quietly pass gas.

Crazy Times...

FLPK

Or  "Funny Looking Peruvian Kid".

What is it about travel to foreign climbs that makes some folk photograph the natives as though they're some sort of human zoo exhibit?

Train at Altitude

Most odd.

From a box of slides with world-wide locations, but none labelled. However, there were other slides with a distinct Peru / South America / Inca / Macchu Pichu feel to them.

So, my assumption is that this is from a trip on one of Bolivia / Peru's high altitude train services, and the "doctor" is dispensing oxygen to those who need it. Just a guess, but if you know more....

Bonus - OMG.    That was unexpected. No fatalities ;oO

Bonus 2 - Other end of the scale...Feed The Kitty   ;o)  (Great name for a dog, BTW)

If You Want To Get Ahead

...get a hat.

This Inca chief came from a box of slides from Peru - I'm sure we'll be seeing more from this set in the future.

Bonus - Actually, as I'm typing this, the music random shuffler chose some Yma Sumac. Coincidental or what?

Bonus 2 - Looks like the Thai remake of Downton Abbey will take some liberties with the script.
