Roadworks Ahead

 

Today's Tedious Tuesday slide is from 1968, and seems to be from China. And it's of roadworks, with a wooden bridge.

Why someone would photograph that....your guess is as good as mine.

Dam!

Well, clearly my week away attempting mediate between Trump and Iran was fruitless, so I'm back. And how better to mark that with this mysterious, unlabelled slide.

However ... This is a view of the Hoover Dam, a concrete arch dam located on the border between Arizona and Nevada.The dam, constructed between 1930 and 1936, impounds the Colorado River to form Lake Mead, one of the largest artificial lakes in the world.The structure is 726 feet (221 meters) high and 1,244 feet (379 meters) long, serving purposes such as flood control, hydroelectric power generation, and agricultural irrigation.

The Disappearing Road

 

Sometime a slide attracts me just because it's gorgeous. 

Like this one, marked only as "Old Creek".  To me, it looks like Arizona...and sure enough, there's an Oak Creek, near to Sedona.  Anyone recognise this road? (That might be Capitol Butte on the horizon.)

Another "No Context" slide image, without even a date to describe it.

It might be a post-rapture image, presuming that automobiles are also part of the "ascending to Heaven" sctick.

But, undoubtedly a tedious image.

It's not often that I find a slide features quite a lot of people, and some questionable fashion choices, but fits into the Tedious Tuesday category.

Today is one of those occasions.

No info on the slide, other that a date Sept 1961 but 'm 99.9% sure that this isn't just outside Norwich.

I'm 96.1% certain that it's not even the UK. Canada perhaps?

If you said "North Yorks County sign, on A1079 nr Kexby, Yorks  Apr 1976", well ... that's what was written on the slide.

Not really very tedious... more of a warning  of the surprises when driving around the countryside.

Yes, the return of RoadSigns Of Britain.

Written on this one - "Kirk... sign nr New Galloway (on A782)  March 1976".

I was in the region a few weeks ago, and I should have tried to track down that sign...but Google Streetview suggest that it's been replaced by boring modern signage.

National Motorway Lighting Day

 

The simple fact is that 99.996% of UK citizens do not give a second thought about Motorway Overhead Lighting (except when it goes wrong). And that's a shame.  It makes motorways safer and lampposts make an important contribution to a Carbon-Free economy.

And that's the thinking behind National Motorway Lighting Day. "Celebrate The Upright."

Although the slide was unlabelled, I believe that this may be the road through Red Canyon, in the Dixie National Forest, un Utah.

Some stock picture libraries label this as a Natural Arch, but ...I think not. Anyone know for sure?

One of the frustrations of film photography was the occasional re-use of a partially used film.  The result, at best, was a quirky and unexpected double exposure. 

Like this one.  Which could pass as an artistic deliberate meditation on humanity, frailty and the dangers of car travel.   Or something.

Meanwhile, just off the M20

We find the charming rustic lane leading towards Great Chart, the site of the first recorded mechanical water mill in Britain, and to Tenterden, the home of Tenterden Operatic and Dramatic Society.

Bonus - The astonishing artistry and skills of Italian Marble Carvers. Yes, that's all marble.

Drive. Drive towards the Setting Sun

Could be anywhere, but more likely to be the United States of America than Weston-Super-Mare.

This was a deteriorated colour slide, but I liked the green-component version better.

One of the geekiest part of this hobby of mine, possible geekier that the the original photographer photographing roadsigns in September 1975, is trying to find the exact location of slides.
