In the quiet Helsinki suburb known as Upshanka, the ancient Finnish craft of Umbrella Making is still practised by a small number of local craftsmen. Traditionally, the umbrellas were made of willow and paper ... which was great for repeat business in the damp Finnish winters.

Nowadays, Finns have rejected the expense, and buy cheap nylon umbrellas which will last a lifetime, leaving the craftsmen to eke a living from tourist trade. As a result, their craft villages are clustered close to the popular mountaineering regions.
