In today's episode of "West-Country Games" (Series 8, Episode 14, Scene 3, if you're keeping track) we see Doreen Butterclough playing the traditional Somerset game of "Ignore The Fruitcake".

At the time of photographing, Doreen had managed to ignore a slice of Dundee Cake for 27 hours, still well short of Mrs Edith Blatt's record.

Bonus - the Binturong, also known as the bearcat, has musk glands emit an odor reminiscent of popcorn.

Yesterday, we had Jo modelling her casualwear. Freddie took that picture.

Today we have roles reversed, with Freddie modelling a drab brown sweater, and Jo driving the 35mm rangefinder camera.

And they're still in Devon.

Another stereotypical fifties image today. The working class trip to the beach, the trip out the pier, the bloke's Shirt, Sweater and Jacket, the ladies big overcoats. Classic.

But why is Edna carrying a single white shoe?

Veranda Life

 

Post WW2 civil architecture doesn't often get a good press, but that often ignores the views of the people of the time.

Having experienced years of slums, and cramped smoky streets...and often blighted by bomb damage... these people then had roomy, bright modern buildings, with features that few would have even heard of years before.

Thus, the veranda was initially a source of pride.

Alas, as years progressed, the shoddy workmanship made those dream homes more of an nightmare.

Keen zoologists will recognise these as being Hapsberg Seals, the only seals native to Austria.   Usually found need Innsbruck, these ones are actually in the Secret Zoo in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte.

Bonus - A forest of immensely tall and unusually straight oak trees planted nearly 200 years ago to build naval ships that never came to be.
