OK, I thought it might be Egypt.

But according to artificial intelligence...

The image shows a panoramic view of the ancient city of Jericho, situated in the Jordan Valley.

Jericho is widely recognized as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with settlements dating back to approximately 9000 BCE.

The city is famously mentioned in biblical history as the first town attacked by the Israelites under Joshua.  Archaeological excavations have revealed the remains of over 20 successive settlements at the site.

Located in the West Bank, it is positioned near the Jordan River and north of the Dead Sea.

A Load of Stone

What the heck is this?

...was my first thought. No info in the box of slides it came in, but other in the box from 1980 looked rather "Egypt-y".

And that was all the clue I needed. Yes, it's the Unfinished Obelisk, at Aswan.

Probably.

The Days Before Quadcopter Drones

Back in 1980, radio-controls model planes were very much the domain of geeks and obsessives.  Nowadays, any little scrote can fly their drone, spying on neighbours and annoying the NIMBYs.

Progress.

This slide is marked 1980, Les and Wynne with Gangster 52.

Must Have Very Small Pilots

Today's slide was marked as "Hawk Towyn 1980",and even without that I'm sure you recognised the shape and lines of a BAE Hawk Trainer aircraft.

More specifically, a radio controlled scale model of one. And dating from before the days of scale model jet engines (notice the disguised propeller on the nose?)

Surf's Up

Seems like Summer is almost here - well, it is the end of May - so let's look back to 1980 and the surfers at play at Swarkestone Gravel Pitts, in Derbyshire.

Trowelsworth Tor

The slide is helpfully marked with "1980-06-Plymouth Reg Guides above Trowelsworthy Warren" which tells you almost everything you want to know.

Oh, that that big block is an unfinished plinth for a flagpole at Devonport Dockyard.  Great Trowlesworthy Tor.

The Bulgarian Teacup

An unusual name, for an unusual plant.   Spheroides Maklabantake is the proper name, and the plant has the rare skill of making a sound like a duck, at moments of danger.

Goat Thursday

The Thursday before Easter has been as Goat Thursday all across Nottinghamshire since the late 17th century.

No-one knows why.

But this slide seemed appropriate.

Goat Rump

Goat Rump were an Indie-Pop band who the NME tipped for greatness in 2010, on the basis of their first single "Spittoon Blues".

Alas, the single flopped, and the band soon disbanded.

Their name was inspired by the 1980's phenomenon of Goat Rump Scratching. Children believed that scratching the hind quarters of a goat would please it so much that the goat would produce fresh cookie dough for the delighted children.

Children are stupid.
