The Long Gallery

This was an Ektachrome slide that suffered from extreme colour deterioration,  giving it a heavy red cast. So, this images is just the blue component.

According to the slide, this was Parham Park, Sussex and the Long Gallery. Fare enough.

n architecture, a long gallery is a long, narrow room, often with a high ceiling. In Britain, long galleries were popular in Elizabethan and Jacobean houses. They were normally placed on the highest reception floor — the uppermost level designed for entertaining guests (usually above the hall and other ground floor rooms) — of English country houses, usually running along a side of the house, with windows on one side and at the ends giving views, and doors to other rooms on the other. They served several purposes, and were perhaps especially used by the women of the family. They were used for entertaining guests (probably only the more favoured ones), for taking exercise in the form of walking when the weather was inclement, for displaying art collections, especially portraits of the family and royalty, and acting as a corridor.

The American Idyll

You may have noticed (or maybe you haven't) but I haven't been posting much here.  And yt, the world keeps turning, Popes still get elected, and Trump still does stupid stuff.

I've been otherwise occupied building a scale model of the building pictured above. Alas, I chose a scale of 1 : 1 so it was quite a complex task.

It's Like Piccadilly Circus in my Back Garden

Why?
Because this weekend I built a scale replica of Piccadilly Circus in my back garden.  A Man needs a hobby.

Obviously it wasn't a full sized replica. It's only 75% scale.

NB: I was trying to figure out the date of this undated, uncommented slide. The location was easy, but the date... well, I think that film advert is for something featuring Spencer Tracy and ??? Sinatra. So, that would be The Devil At 4 O' Clock, from 1962.

Cows doing High-Altitude Training

Before they embark on their annual Mount Everest Milk-Supply Missions, the cows of Belgium carry out six months of training in the High Alps of Austria. Here they are cud-chewing near the Buddist Temple near Innsbruck.

or maybe near Kitzbuhel

Oh Boy. That's a bit dull

The slide appears to be The Mansion House, in York, but I'm severely doubting that this slide will inspire anyone to visit it.

Despite that, the website says "Past the grandeur of the prominent green doors and beautiful facade lies a home built for entertaining royalty, with a rich civic and personal history. As the oldest purpose built home for a Lord Mayor in the country, the stories of scandal and frivolity woven into the fabric of the building are still being told, and we’d love for you to discover them."

Bonus.   On the other hand, the art exhibit The Moon Museum, features artwork by Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, David Novros, Forrest Myers, Robert Rauschenberg, John Chamberlain, and would probably attract many visits, ...were it not for the cost of getting there.

Sunday in the Park with Junior

What a remarkably calm and restful scene - a mother, daughter, son-in-law and their grad-daughter enjoying the air of a crisp Sunday Afternoon.

Except... there's a secret. Karen, the daughter is actually Kevin, and he's en femme after going AWOL from the US Navy Seals - not every guy wanted to head off to Vietnam. So, while awaiting his hair to grown long, and a chance to head north to safety in Canada, Kevin was hiding in plain sight, with a toddler from a nearby Orphanarium.

More American Architecture

I don't know why, but I find slides like this, or rural American architecture, fascinating.

When I win the National Lottery (unlikely, especially asI don't play it) I would be tempted to build a house like this.

Bonus - Barry Cryer in conversation with Richard Herring (over an hour, but very enjoyable.)

Reddington's Rare Records

Nothing written on this slide, but it wasn't difficult to track down some details. Long story short,

1985, and the centre of Birmingham was being redeveloped. And, Reddingtons (Later Reddington's Rare Records) was in the way of  "Urban Improvement".

Fortunately, Reddington's was able to relocate, and survived until just a few years ago.

I bet this brings back memories for Birminghamites.
