In the days before dayglo, lightweight, tensioned-hoop geodesic dome tents (or whatever) this was a typical campsite set up. And much nicer it was too. 

OK, I may be getting all "Back in my day..." fuddy duddy, but that is my opinion.

Regular Readers - yes, there are some -  will know that I will often rant about slides with no information. Well, in the recently scanned batch, one antique adventurer is gaining their revenge.

Remembering that the slide is only 2 inches square, with a 24mmx 36mm slide, one side is crammed with scrawly, hand-written text (obscure this slide date :-( ) saying 

Our first overnight jungle camp on the Amazon River. First door on right was ours. The long walk lead to the toilets' A tapir walks through here at night.

How Strange.

After a slide about Mysterious Corner, I disappear (mysteriously) for a week.

So, in honour of the cold wind and sunshine we're having here, here's a slide which was labelled "Snow and Cold 1 Nov 1950". It's from the Camp Koosharem set. Obviously.

This slide does bring on a slight pang of nostalgia. In my days as a Scout Leader, I used to enjoy having a few nights under canvas, and living the simple life.

Pity those damned Scouts had to spoil everything with incessant whingeing about lack of TV and suchlike.

The Black Tent

I've gotta admit it, it's a marketing opportunity that most companies would have missed.  

Camping in the wilderness, you'll either want a tent you can spot from miles off, or you'll want an understated tent that doesn't spoil the nateral beauty of the mountains.   Easy, bright orange or dark green.    Or maybe a white tent to reflect the worst of the hot sun.    Sorted.

But what about Goth and Emo Campers ?   Hey, even goths go camping.

Fergus and Francine Farkle, enjoying the delights of rural Kentucky.  OK, not really lightweight camping....Fergus found an ex-army tent, and I'm with him: that looks far more comfortable than some minuscule nylon coffin.  Go Fergus !!
