It's Like Piccadilly Circus in my Back Garden

 

Why?

Because this weekend I built a scale replica of Piccadilly Circus in my back garden.  A Man needs a hobby.

Obviously it wasn't a full sized replica. It's only 75% scale.

NB: I was trying to figure out the date of this undated, uncommented slide. The location was easy, but the date... well, I think that film advert is for something featuring Spencer Tracy and ??? Sinatra. So, that would be The Devil At 4 O' Clock, from 1962.

Alas, it cannae Be.  The slide dates to 1963, when  Marianne Joan Elliott-Said would have been six.

London, Chatham and Dover Railway

The London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LCDR) was a railway company in south-eastern England created on 1 August 1859, when the East Kent Railway was given Parliamentary approval to change its name. Its lines ran through London and northern and eastern Kent to form a significant part of the Greater London commuter network. The company existed until 31 December 1922 when its assets were merged with those of other companies to form the Southern Railway as a result of the grouping determined by the Railways Act 1921. 

This would appear to be the Badge of the LCDR from the first Blackfriars Railway Bridge

This slide was marked as  "London V and A Museum 7-24-87", but as any cultured person would recognise, this is actually Thomas Banks's "Thetis dipping Achilles in the River Styx".

Beside that is the self portrait sculpture by/of Gilbert and George from 1973.

No info on this, but following a hunch, I'm fairly sure that this is the
Royal Artillery Memorial, at Hyde Park Corner.

A work by Charles Jagger and Lionel Pearson, and features a giant sculpture of a BL 9.2-inch Mk I howitzer upon a large plinth of Portland stone.

Welcome to London Cannon Street

Strangely, knowing my bad luck and the number of sad old train spotters back then, I actually have very few slides of trains and rolling stock.

Thank Goodness.

However, I do have this one. And from a little Googling, this is a unique one.  This particular ...thing ... is the only preserved British Rail Class 401. Also known as the 2-BIL,... as in  (2-car Bi-Lavatory stock, they were used until Zzzzzzzzzz........

This is what real people looked like in 1967.  There may be thousand of picture of Prince Charles at his Investiture, but this, THIS, is what normal folk look like.

TS Queen Mary

For a Tedious Tuesday, this slide is remarkably interesting.

From what I can read on the bow, this could be the "Queen Mary".   A little digging, and it seems to be a good call. It's actually the TS Queen Mary, rather than one of the bigger liners on that name.

Docklands

Today's Tedious Tuesday slide is possibly interesting.

This slide was in a box of others (gasp) but the only other square format slides were of London and the Thames.

So, I deduce that this scene might be of .... London Docklands, before the financial zone regeneration thing.

But I might be wrong.

100 Years On...

For those who don't know...

Temple Bar Tandoori

 As I've mentioned (several times) there's a certain enjoyment in looking at a slide, and finding enough clues to locate a slide subject or location.

Today, the float has a partially hidden sign suggesting this is part of The Lord Mayor's Parade - a London event that for some reason is broadcasting on nationwide television. The flag on the left seems to have a Pudsey on it, so it's post 1985.

Some creative searching lead to a Streetview of the location. The Temple Bar Tandoori seems to be still in business, tho' not visible on Streetview. However, the similarity of old/new phone numbers does suggest it's the same business.

Sad Git, amn't I?

Sometimes there's a slide with is either magnificent or inept.

The Bloody Tower

There;s nothing to beat a slide of a historical architectural detail from a tourist trap, is there.

The Bloody Tower is in the Tower of London, and gained it's names from the local residents who objected to to it at the planning application review stage.It would spoil their view of the dunghills. Apparently.
