Written on this one - "Kirk... sign nr New Galloway (on A782)  March 1976".

I was in the region a few weeks ago, and I should have tried to track down that sign...but Google Streetview suggest that it's been replaced by boring modern signage.

 There's a certain satisfaction in finding a slide, and thinking - "I have no idea where that is .... but I'm gonna figure it out".

And so it is with this one. I could go through all of my workings, but basically, it turns out to be Brisbane, Australia.

I even found that this signpost has been supplanted / replaced by a later one with slightly different distances. There's a stock  picture of it avail from Alamy, but they for 35quid to use it on a website. Nope. Screw that.

Looking for a slide today, and delved into the vaguely interesting "UK RoadSigns" collection.  And this was the first one out.  Curious, because Ormesby St Margaret is about a mile and a half from a house that my sister tried to buy.

This slide dates from August 1975, but there still seems to be a similar sign. 2007

Well, I have to assume that teh distances are roughly correct, and I realised that the distances aren't in miles.

With my extensive training in foreign languages, I can translate for you.

The road sign says "Take Care when Crossing", and the friendly greeting in spray-paint says "Enjoy". Clearly the local lads are happy to welcome us into their hovel.

Which is nice.

From the "UK Road Signs in 1975" Collection. This one is labelled as Oswaldkirk town sign, on B1257, October 1975.

Pretty inspirational.  In fact, when I write my award-winning novel, I may well adopt Oswald Kirk as my nom-de-plume.  Or maybe when I send threatening letters to the Daily Mail.
