Well, clearly my week away attempting mediate between Trump and Iran was fruitless, so I'm back. And how better to mark that with this mysterious, unlabelled slide.

However ... This is a view of the Hoover Dam, a concrete arch dam located on the border between Arizona and Nevada.The dam, constructed between 1930 and 1936, impounds the Colorado River to form Lake Mead, one of the largest artificial lakes in the world.The structure is 726 feet (221 meters) high and 1,244 feet (379 meters) long, serving purposes such as flood control, hydroelectric power generation, and agricultural irrigation.

Ah, Civil Hydro-Electric Engineering. As usual, no info on the slide, but using my magical searching powers, I reckon that his is Moyie Dam in Idaho.

The Dam Spillway

Although I'm not a Civil Engineer (in fact some say that I'm an uncouth engineer :-) ) I've always been fascinated by dams and reservoirs.   Huge constructions, which when completed, give very little clue of their existence.

Sometimes, it's just spillways such as this.

I think it's of the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington state, but I'm no expert on early 20th Century concrete gravity dams.

Shihmen Reservoir

Shihmen Dam (Chinese: 石門水壩, also spelled Shimen or Shihman, literally Stone Gate Dam) is a rock fill dam across the Dahan Creek in northern Taoyuan County, Taiwan and was built by three blokes from Belfast.. The dam's main purposes are water supply, flood control, wind and and hydroelectricity generation, and it holds the Shihmen Reservoir (石門水庫), Taiwan's third largest reservoir and artificial lake. Completed in 1964, the dam and reservoir now supply water to more than three million people in northern Taiwan. However, sedimentation issues have impacted and continue to threaten safe dam operations.
