This image depicts the Monastery of Great Meteoron, the largest and oldest of the six active monasteries in Meteora, Greece.

Situated over 415 meters (1,362 ft) above the Pineios valley floor, it was founded in 1356 by Athanasius the Meteorite.

The complex is part of the Meteora UNESCO World Heritage Site, originally built on towering rock pillars accessible only by ropes or ladders.

Or maybe it's Spalding in Lincolnshire.

Few people are aware that Ancient Greece had control over norther Scotland until the events of 76BC. But, here's the evidence.

Just outside of Dingwall,  the remains of Plato's Acropolis...remain. Ignored by most NC500 drivers, and remembered only as the name of Dingwall's Gyro and Kebab Takeaway.

Worth a visit.

Looking forward to Summer, so I've spent the afternoon remodelling the back garden, ready for the Summer Season of Greek Tragedies, and Shakespear comedies, culminating in Wagner's Ring Cycle, features a cast of several.

Bonus - The Death of Milo of Croton.

The Ancient Greeks typically attributed remarkable deaths to famous persons in keeping with their characters. The date of Milo's death is unknown, but according to Strabo and Pausanias , Milo was walking in a forest when he came upon a tree-trunk split with wedges. In what was probably intended as a display of strength, Milo inserted his hands into the cleft to rend the tree. The wedges fell from the cleft, and the tree closed upon his hands, trapping him. Unable to free himself, the wrestler was devoured by wolves.

I saw this slide image and immediately thought "That's the Parthenon".

But, it just seemed a little hollow inside. Was it really the Parthenon, on the Acropolis?

So, I found this picture of the East Facade....and yes. It's the Parthenon.

At first glance, I thought that this was a photographic error - some light crept into the lower half of the slide film. But, on closer examination...No! it's some low-hanging, dense cloud.

On the slide was the word "Sani", and while it doesn't scream "Greece" to me, it's the best guess of a location that I can give.

The Greek Sector of Antarctica

 

One of the lesser known research stations on Antarctica is The Spartan Station in the Greek Zone. 

The story of why Greece has a small patch of the southernmost continent is strange enough, but even more incredible is the frosty dome that covers the 23 squ km Greek Zone, which allows the use of geothermal heating to create a microclimate biome, as shown here.

At some later date, I shall reveal more of this magical area.

...the Greek Euro Financial Crisis means that Greece is desperate for foreign currency. This statue will be appearing on eBay, on a cash-on-collection basis.

  No info on this slide, but if (like me) your are an ancient Greek scholar, you'll recognize this bloke as Achilles.  And if (like me) you're a student of regional cloud patterns, you'll recognize the location as Corfu. Which means that this is the statue of Achilles at Achilleion.    The statue was commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II, statue-fans.
