Where In The World? - Game 78

Today's challenge comes in from a Mrs Trellis of North Wales, who asks if anyone can recognise this location?   Is it

  1. The Upper Circle of the Shepton Mallet Odeon?
  2. The geyser Geysir in Iceland?
  3. The Pyramids at Gaza?
  4. The remodelled Rose Garden at The White House?

Answers on a postcard to the usual address.

Bonus - RIP Dolly.

Ken and his Ladies

Ken Worthing had a bit of a reputation as "A Ladies' Man", and this slide helps prove the legend.

Not only Foxy Fiona and Luscious Louise, but the photo was taken by Busty Babs. No wonder Ken was banned from every Woolworths' store in Cornwall.

Brutal Beach

Mmmm. Concrete boxes. At the beach.

I think this slide features the modernist architecture of the "Les Carrats" holiday village designed by Georges Candilis, located in Port-Leucate, France.

The complex is composed of white, cubic-shaped bungalows and collective buildings designed for tourist accommodation. It was one of the first constructions created during the development of Port-Leucate at the end of the 1960s.

Or maybe Mansfield.

The Mystery Rock of Glen Tarff

Yes, THAT famous Mystery Rock of Glen Tarff.

Why is it mysterious?  No-one remembers.

Where exactly is it?  Sorry, privileged information.

Bridesmaids of the "Punk" Era

The slide is stamped as "4th November 1978", so rights at the peak of the explosion of Punk music. Rat Trap by The Boomtown Rats was at Number 3 in the UK Singles Charts, Public Image by PIL was at Number 9, and the top twenty featured Sham 69 and Buzzcocks. Heck, at number 40 was Ivor Biggun and The Winker's Song.

Yet, outside of that punk bubble,  in the general public, fashions changed slowly. Especially for Bridesmaids and ...gulp... Bridegrooms???      ...and Summer Nights by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John was number one.  A weird time.

The Climthorpe Fire-Cat Scandal

On of the local scandals which has rather faded from the Climthorpe village heritage is the 1978 Summer Fete Scandal.

It seemed a fairly standard summer fayre, with the Climthorpe and Fustleton Volunteer Fire Department putting on a demonstration of "How to rescue a cat from a tree" using the Dennis Rotating Fire Ladder. (Shown in the slide image)

What emerged later was that Mr Wilkins, the CFVFD stunt cat had wandered off for a snooze, and wasn't available for the demonstration. Rather than disappoint the masses, Fire Chief McDonald "borrowed" one of the Vietnamese Boat Folk kids from the Orphanarium display, put them in fancy dress cat costume, then chased them up a tree.

No harm done, and Sgt Fitzhugh wasn't minded to raise a report....but ill-feeling remained for several years.

Lazing on the Beach

As usual, no info on the slide, other than a date of 1978.

But no fear, my awesome Google and geographic skills mean that I can identify this as being Seaham, in North East England (Geordie-land.)  The clue is the topless bathing ladies in the bottom right, one of who's has a "Newcastle Brown Ale" tattoo,

The Flatulent Cleric

Little known fact.

In a survey of the major religions in 1998, the priests of the Greek Orthodox Church were found to be the most flatulent.

Whether that is due to diet or genetics needs further investigation.

This slide was labelled as Priest at Negades

The Grey Skies of Easter

So, that's it.

Easter 2023 is past.

Patches of sunshine, ending with grey clouds, hailstorms, thunder and chilly winds.

Must be a metaphor for life.

If you want to get ahead...

...get a hat.

Straw hats are de rigeur for the event. In this case the event is "1978 Nov Dartmouth Cancer Care Fete".  In this case, I suspect this is the American Dartmouth, rather than the English one.

Junior Goes Pony Trekking

It's may be out of focus, but it'd the only evidence of Edgar going pony-trekking.

By the end of the afternoon, Edgar hated horses, ponies and all equestrian activities ... but would never reveal why.

"Just Park Where You Like"

Can you appreciate the beauty of concrete hotel design sixties and seventies?   I struggle with it.

You might imagine that the Hotel Albarella is located on the Adriatic Coast of Italy, close to Venice.

Alas, no. This one, thanks to some Google-Fu, is located in San Bernardino, Switzerland. 1600metres above the Adriatic, beautiful hills, blighted by this monstrosity

And it looks like it's still there, and (in 2014) still seemed to be its ugly, horrible
self. Yeuch.

Bonus - Rio de Janeiro was once the capital of Portugal. Following the conquest of Portugal by Napoleon, the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil (1808-1821). They then established the capital of Portugal in Rio de Janeiro.

Sun Worshippers

Here in Slideville, this late November Sunday has had quite a few patches of sunshine, and it made me think of hot summer days with hot summer babes in bikinis. Like Madge and Gladys here. They do rather demonstrate the link between Tanning (exposur of skin to the sunshine) and Tanning (the treatment of leather to make it tough and resilient.)

Thermos Flask or Camping Stove ???

It could be any small carpark in England (in 1978), and these folks are enjoying a refreshing cup of tea.

Tea?  Of course. It has to be tea. Don't let those coffee mugs confuse you, these folks are definitely tea-drinkers.

But the big question is, did they bring their tea in a Thermos flask, or did they fire up the Camping Gas stove for the best possible fresh brew?

Enquiring minds need to know.

August Bank Holiday

Yes, the end of august, and the final Bank Holiday of the year.

So, let's celebrate with these two ladies. identified only as "J & K on the Beach, 1978."  Clearly in the ladies believed that SPF 50 Sun Protection is for wussies, they hopefully believed that their leathery skin would provide some protection from the slings and arrows of outrageous comments. Nice.

Maude at Suicide Point

It had been a desire for many years, and eventually Maude Cuthbertson visited Suicide Point, on the Burton-upon-Trent Boardwalk.

Located just around the corner from the Coastguard's station, and a decent walk from the Lifeguard hangout, it was a quiet spot.

But who took that picture?

Ostracized On A Rock

When the small Norwegian community of Skoglholt  found out about the unnatural desires of the threesome of Agnes, Marta and Carlos, they subjected then to the most severe punishment that their church.

They were stranded on a rock in the stream for a period of three hours, one summer afternoon.

It is a very silly punishment.
