At Home With The Hunter

 

As is often the case, it's fascinating trying to build a narrative from the small details in the slide.  In this case, there's a host of little observations.

The elephant tusks around the fireplace, the (possible) buffalo head above the fire, the zebra skin cushions, the cushion with a giraffe, the Desert Pattern Camo curtains. Yes, I'm sure that that plaid shirt guy is one of those "I shoot wild animals for sport" nutters. Showing off to a couple of visiting relatives.

It was a Simpler Time

 

This is from a set / box marked as "Camp - Koosharem, Utah", and with slides dated 1949 and Oct/Nov 1950. So, gulp, 75 years ago. Nice.

Most of the slides show men enjoying a deer hunting camp, and a proper camp in tents, rather than some swanky luxury cabin. Mmmm, Venison.

Bonus - Of all things in the US Presidential campaign that made me cringe, this was the most painful.

After a disappointing Christmas Season, and with Global Warming affecting their natural food (snowmen), Santa Claus bowed to the inevitable... and restocked hi venison freezer.

The Pheasant Hunters

You know, I never really thought about the geographical spread of pheasants...until I saw this slide.

And yes, someone introduced the common pheasant into America, so rednecks like Sam and Sam (above) can go shootin' for sport.

The Red -Hatted Butchers

There's a great box of slide in the collection, marked "Koosharem, Utah", and seems to depict a Fall 1950 hunting expedition.  Proper tents, and lots and LOTS of freshly butchered venison.

Why the Red Hats ?   Fashion statement, or may an attempt to avoid being shot by so many red-necked hunters.

Finally, a slide with some context. "Charly Dean - Broad View Oct 1950" and a box marked as "Camp - Koosharem, Utah".

From the rest of the slide, it appears that a bunch of middle aged guys spend an autumn weekend hunting and butchering deer.

Prancer's Demise

Yes, in November 1950, Prancer couldn't make the grade at the Sleigh Tryout Trials, and Hank Claus (in red hat) put him out of his misery. After that, a new Prancer was recruited, and served faithfully for many years.

What?  You thought Santa's reindeer were immortal?   Shame on you.

Saw this, and had one of those odd tangential thoughts/observations.

"Hmm.  They have pheasants in the USA!"

A quick bit of wiki-ing, and ...yes, it appears that the Common Pheasant has been introduced into North America.
