Tedious Tuesday has arrived again, and we have another Tedious yet Strangely Interesting slide.

This is from the Travels around South America with someone who writes a lot on the slide mounts collection. On this one - "A memorial to Simon Bolivar, the great liberator on a  mountain top overlooking the city of Caracas, Venezuela".

I wonder if it's still there...

Staring intensely at this slide, I could make out the word "Ecuador", and that was all the confirmation that I needed to conclude that this monument is actually Ciudad Mitad del Mundo. It highlights the exact location of the Equator (from which the country takes its name) and commemorates the eighteenth century Franco-Spanish Geodesic Mission which fixed its approximate location; they also contain the Museo Etnográfico Mitad del Mundo, Ethnographic Museum Middle of the Earth, a museum about the indigenous people ethnography of Ecuador.

The 30-metre-tall (98 ft) monument was constructed between 1979 and 1982 by Pichincha's Province Council to replace an older, smaller monument built by the Government of Ecuador under the direction of the geographer Luis Tufiño in 1936. It is made of iron and concrete and covered with cut and polished andesite stone. The monument was built to commemorate the first Geodesic Mission of the French Academy of Sciences.

And I'm sure it comes as no surprise, that the monument is mis-placed, and actually 240metres south of the equator.

Obviously there story of the The Four Bells of Santa Maria is well known to one and all, but this view is not the view that most pilgrims see.

This is from inside the mausoleum, and is rarely accessible nowadays (due to The Littlejohn Effect).

So, enjoy this view.

As usual there was no information on or with this slide.  It was just an interesting enigma.




But that's not enough to dissuade me.

using a Ouija Board, some stilton and a copy of the Austin Princess Owner's Handbook, I've figured out that this is the Shelley Memorial.  Looks like they've redecorated the room since this slide was taken.

The title emerged from a discussion at work of "Autobiographies I'd Like to Read".... but an excess of coffee seemed to affect me.

Even ignoring the partial double-exposure, this slide proved trouble. Ektachrome and Time meant that there was little more than red pigment in the image.

Still, I was able to rescue a picture of Milton and Maude.

Long term visitors may recognise something about this slide, especially related to this one.

My first thought was that Natural Bridge was an archaic and endangered card game, but actually it's actually another battle in the American Civil War, this time in Florida.

Fans of the blog will recognise Maude in this slide, and will undoubtedly conclude that this was another horrendously deteriorated Ektachrome slide, made readable by witchcraft and conversion to monochrome. And they'd be right.
