Well, clearly that's somewhere.

Could be almost anywhere, I suppose.

However, based upon the angle of the sun, the rock used in the masonry, and the crest above the entrance, I deduce that it is, in fact, Berwick Upon Tweed Barracks.

In fact, here

"He said Shhhh?"

" No. He said something about the Meek, but I couldn't hear because you were prattling."

"Shhhh you numpty"

Due to Financial Cutbacks

... the fourteen separate UK Army Bands, Orchestras, String Quartets and Pipe Bands will be merged into a single unit, and reduced in number as shown adjacent.

Harsh.

Bonus - Sometimes, my brain just pictures something, and I have to comply.

Never a Good Idea - Phoebus Nuclear Engine

Looking for a slide to post, this one caught my eye, and I tried to figure out what it was.  Some sort of reaction vessel,...but what about those missile/bombs on the right?

Ah.   The Phoebus atomic engines. Good Grief.   How could that be a valid idea?  And yes, the test firing went badly.

Bonus - Fungi is growing on the walls of Chernobyl's ruined nuclear reactor. They seem to absorb radiation and convert it into chemical energy for growth.

West Point Wilfred

OK. This is probably not a West Point uniform. Not my area of expertise, so it could be the unform  Miss Mildred Enderby's School of Military Killing, Neddlepoint and Lace-Making. But, probably isn't.

Still, Wilf does look rather worried that during the graduation event, mother is going to rip off he coat and streak across the parade ground. Again.

Waiting for Shore Leave

The writing on the slide says Manila 9-Mar-1951, and I have no reason to disagree.

However, "Shore Leave" make sense for the Navy ... What's the equivalent term for the US Air Force?

Not Going To Vietnam

1969, and this is the moment when Joe Fitzwilliam hears that he's not going to serve in Vietnam.

Thanks to a family connection (Uncle Chris is a Senator) Joe would be assigned to an Army research facility in Arkansas.

Alas, Joe was selected to take part in a trial of the military applications of LSD, and unfortunately... well, Least Said, Soonest Mended.

Final Family Photo

;

While Billy Mitchell may have disappeared (see yesterday's pic), the rest of the Mitchell family gather for a family photo, and you can really tell what they're thinking :

Frank Mitchell : "I fought on the beaches of Okinawa, but to have a draft dodger as a sone....well, that really grinds my gears."
Margaret Mitchell : "Great...I finally have a daughter...of sort."
Robert Mitchell : "Military College... dammit. I don't deserve this. My parents hate me."
Kevin Mitchell : "Great. I get a bedroom of my own now!"

Trouble and Strife

Good quality slide, no??

well, there's no photoshopping or mucking about with contrast or colours.  Which makes it all the more remarkable that this Kodachrome Slide is 75 years old.   No, really.

This slide is marked "Jack and Elaine", and is dated 1943. I have to imagine that as Ensign Jack heads off to war, he and Elaine decide to get engaged...thus this slide.  I wonder what their story is...

Graduation Day

A classic slide from the earlier sixties. (Or so I guess - the men are generally hatless, and the women still wear gloves. Feels like a JFK-era shot.

Whether it's West Point graduation, or just a particularly militaristic High School, I don't really know.

Bonus - Saw these two while parking in ASDAs Car Park. :-)

MIM-23 Hawk

You know, you really can't tell what's going to turn up in a box of slides. Yesterday, I was working my way through a box of someone's round the world trip slides (good news - they're all labeled, bad news - illegible handwriting) and this turns up.

You might be thinking "That's a MIM-23 Hawk Surface-to-Air missile". And you'd be right.
