20th November, and there's some snow falling on England.

Which obviously means that the media is screaming about Snowpocalyses, and "It's all Global Warming, Innit?"

So, this vintage slide seems appropriate.

The Bridal Spare

 

That was the tradition in Doncaster.

There was always a risk that the bride would say "I Don't" at the critical point. At which point, a pre-prepared Spare would be wheeled in, and after a quick move of the veil, the back-up would step up.

In this slide Gladys Harper (on the left) got cold feet, and Mavis Farnsworth (with the veil) stepped into the breach.

These reserve brides were usually on a 6-month contract, after which they would be on their way out....with a hefty cheque, or 60 head of sheep...depending upon contractual terms.

There was no written info on the slide, other than "ACM Siggraph".

But, it doesn't take a genius to know that that means the SIGGRAPH 1983: Exhibition of Computer Art, and their decent archives allowed a rapid identification of this as Marilyn Abers' artwork The Pool.

Fascinating to see how leading edge computer graphics have advanced in 41 years.

Every May Day Bank Holiday, he would return. His face permanently in shadow, to prevent identification.

No-one knew who he was (tho' it was rumoured that he had a brother called Kevin) but he wouold return to the Thetford Municipal Scout Hut (shown above) to guard their Spring Picnic.

And true to his word, there were no alligator attacks while he was on duty.

The Desert Landscape

 

One of the side-effects of watching quality television is that certain scenery become inextricably linked to certain actvities.

Case in point, years ago, I would have seen this image and thought "Lovely desert scenery". Now, my thought is "I wonder if this is where Walt and Jesse cooked up in their Winnebago."

How Strange !

Just been scanning some old boxes, and there are a couple of professionally produces slides marked "ACM 1983 SIGGRAPH"

Some googling reveals that this refers to SIGGRAPH '83: Proceedings of the 10th annual conference on Computer graphics and interactive techniques

July 25th-29th, 1983.
This website has an archive, and actually shows and names this image.

And that website reveals that this image was computer generated, and submitted as a physical print to the event.  I guess that that print was then photographed to create a master slide...which was then duplicated.  I have one of those duplicate slides....and have digitised it so that it can be shared via computer.  How rare.

This lockdown means that I have fewer excuses to avoid looking out the old scanner, and scanning some more of the backlog of slides. If I do 100 per day, then... gulp.

This slide, in a large box-full, with a posting date of June 2011, is labelled "Antelope Valley 4-16-83", so the blog title seems appropriate.

Today I learned that Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve State Natural Reserve exists, and yes, does seem to be the location of this slide.
