The Quivering Pheasant

 

The Quivering Grouse is a native of the Kamchatka Peninsula, of Easter Russia.

Specifically, it lives in the volcanic region, where it uses the heat from the lava-flows to stay warm. When capture for western zoos, it quivers (technically, shivers) while awaiting its inevitable death from Hypothermia.

Breeding programmes have been successful when the flocks have been allowed to roam under the reactors of nuclear power station, but that does bring other hazards.

Rodeo Practise Night

 People sometimes ask what the point of collecting other folks slides is, and ... and frankly I'm not really sure.  Little moments of real life captured forever, but saved from the rubbish bin.

Sometimes, I happen across a slide and think that some band, somewhere is screaming out for a certain image for the cover of their latest CD, and I might just have it.

So, sometimes, I mock up imaginary CDs.  I guess even that is going the way of silver-based photography. CD Sales have been dropping since, well, since I started collecting slides.

The Greek Sector of Antarctica

 

One of the lesser known research stations on Antarctica is The Spartan Station in the Greek Zone. 

The story of why Greece has a small patch of the southernmost continent is strange enough, but even more incredible is the frosty dome that covers the 23 squ km Greek Zone, which allows the use of geothermal heating to create a microclimate biome, as shown here.

At some later date, I shall reveal more of this magical area.

Bonus - Weather Station Kurt  was an automatic weather station, erected by a German U-boat crew in northern Labrador, Dominion of Newfoundland (nowadays in Canada) in October 1943.

Six Month To / From Christmas

 Yes, scarily, we're past the summer solstice, and Christmas Day is only six months off.

So, lets celebrate with this snowy scene, apparently of a thatched cottage called Hollyhocks (if I can make out the blurred detail.)

Alas, I have been unable to track down where this cottage is / was. Hollyhocks and Thatched Cottage produced a metric shit-ton of hits.

Bonus - Morse code is officially considered obsolete and was removed as an international standard for communication in 1999. The French Navy's last Morse message read; "Calling all. This is our last cry before our eternal silence."
