First Fish of the Year

 

I think that everyone is aware how much American's love taking photographs of their fishing catches. (If not, try the Fish category on the sidebar).

This is the first such image of 2026, and it features someone who's thrilled by the prospect of skinning and gutting this here fish.

Americans have a strange compulsion to be photographed holding the fish that they  angled.

Fishin' At The Hole

 It was an Idaho tradition, or so I am told. A family would dig a hole in their back yard, fill it with water, stock it with fish, and spend the summer at their "Cabin" with Papa fishing, and the family sunning themselves.

The tradition lasted until the late 70s, when a combination of cheap air fares and Trout Live disease mean that flying to Florida was a better summer break.

It's Twos-Day !

 

To mark Twos-Day (the once in a lifetime? day of 22-2-22 ) I went looking for an suitably appropriate slide.

And gave up quite quickly.

Instead, here's a tedious slide of a slightly interesting event.

It seems to be a muddy lake with a writhing mass of catfish (?) feeding on a raccoon carcass. Or something.

Tasty.

Bonus - Movie trailers have undergone a huge evolution. They’ve gone from those cheesy voice-of-God narrators in the ‘80s and ‘90s, to boojes and bwaas.

Again, it comes as no surprise that I have another "American holding a fish that they caught" slide.

Today, Hank holds a fully grown Wisconsin Piranha.

That may sound dangerous, but the Wisconsin Piranha.only eats cheese, not flesh.

Apologies for the quality of the slide (tho' not my fault). Sorry that the exposure is iffy, sorry that the horizon is slanted (tho' that might be real), sorry that there's mold growing on the slide.

However, the slide is of historic importance - How many other slides have you seen with the Layton Nailing Fish To A Plank Champions of 1960?  This might be the only record of husband and wife team Veronica and Herbert Basham, who stormed to a famous victory with their innovative "Bulgarian Teacup" technique, which was outlawed in future years.
