Hopefully I don't have to explain, but Yes, this was a slide with a SEVERE colour cast / fade, and this is just a single RGB channel extracted from the digital image.

Travelling Home for Christmas

 

It's a couple of days before Christmas (you probably noticed) so there will be lots of folk planning to fly somewhere for the festive season.

This slide, from 60 odd years ago harks back to the Golden Age. An age when people would dress properly (hat, shirt and tie for the gents, hat and gloves for the ladies) rather than sweat-pants and a t-shirt nowadays.

The aircraft - I reckon it's a Lockheed Constellation.

On first seeing this faded Ektachrome slide, I thought "Definite Tedious Tuesday slide."

However, reducing it to monochrome, and straightening up the horizontal... it's rather a striking composition. I like it.

I believe that this is of an airport, and the covered walkways that existed before the modern articulated, 20ft above the ground ones.

Bonus - The reason why we view neanderthals as hunched over and degenerate is that the first skeleton to be found was arthritic.

A Bunch of 747s

 

An increasingly rare sight nowadays. A ramp full of Boeing 747 Jumbo Jets, and very early ones at that.  Air France, Lufthansa, SAS.... ah. Memories.

Nowadays, it would be a bunch of identikit twin-engine aircraft, which even planespotters struggle to identify the different planes.

After the responses to yesterday's AA B727 slide, I thought I have a play with this slide from the same box / set / day / airport.   Unusually, I prefer this slide with some fairly severe image manipulation.  Just sharpness settings...but still ... a bit dramatic.

That's not a Boeing B727 this time - It's a Boeing 707.   You're welcome.

The Douglas DC-9.  One of the pioneers of the twin-jet short-haul passenger operations.

This one YU-AHW was a DC-9-33RC, meaning it could rapidly change (RC) between Freight and Passenger carrying roles.

Another Tedious Tuesday slide. I'm trying to think of some cockamamie fact to make this slide even slightly interesting.

Nope. Failed.

Bonus - "Cockamamie" - By the look and sound of it, cockamamy (also spelled "cockamamie") seems like an arbitrarily coined nonsense word-but a reasonable explanation for its origin exists. Supposedly, cockamamy is an altered form of the term decalcomania, which denotes a process of transferring pictures and designs from specially prepared paper to surfaces such as glass or porcelain. The word decalcomania comes from the combination of French décalquer, meaning "to copy by tracing," and -manie, meaning "mania." In the 1940s, painted strips of paper with images capable of being transferred to the skin were called "decals" or "cockamanies." They were naturally regarded by many as silly novelties. Hence, in time, the variant cockamamie came to be used as an adjective meaning "ridiculous."

The plane is interesting - the rather square windows are unusual - not a great design from the stress raiser viewpoint. I suspect that this beauty is a Convair CV-240.  But I could be wrong.
