This is the 13th-century painted stone tomb effigy of Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine located at Fontevraud Abbey in France. Eleanor of Aquitaine (c. 1122–1204) was a powerful medieval ruler who served as queen consort of both France and England. Unlike standard medieval tomb figures that showed people with hands folded in passive prayer, this sculpture unusually portrays her reading a book. Location: The colourful sculpture rests in the abbey church alongside the tombs of her husband, King Henry II, and her son, Richard the Lionheart.

All Hallows' Day

 

All Saints Day, or All Hallows Day, celebrated in honour of all the saints of the church, whether they are known or unknown. It seems like one of the few days it would be appropriate to post a graveyard shot.

I was going to label this as "Visiting old boyfriends", but my sense of taste kicked in.

What Goths Used To Look Like

Goths have existed for many many years, but it's amazing how the fashions have changed.

Fifty years ago, goths hanging out in cemeteries, were not as cliche-ed in their clothing. Their ethos was that even the most depraved individuals can ust look like everyone else.

The only clue to this pair's goth-ness (other than hanging around at gravesides) were Trevor's goatskin shows and Mabel's dress, in dalmation-skin print fabric.

Having missed out on a Tedious Tuesday slide (due to a recurring work-related stress problem), I've returned and give you a Wacky Winter Wednesday slide.

As soon as I scanned this slide, I realised that there was something different about this slide. But.... it wasn't really obvious what.

OK, with hindsight, it's obvious. But it took a while for an idea to blossom, then some Google-Fu confirmed it.

This is a view of John F Kennedy's original grave at Arlington Cemetery. As usual Wikipedia has more info, but  in summary : JFK  was shot on 22-11-1963 (48 years ago today) and the initial plan for a Hollywood burial was replaced by the Arlington Cemetery plan.  He was buried there on 25-11-1963, and at Jacqui's request there was an Eternal Flame installed. (I suspect the boxy structure in the background is the Propane Tank.

In March 1967, the bodies (JFK and two children) were moved to the new permanent grave.

Bonus - no doubt someone will complain but - a date appropriate song.  A Punk Classic.
