As usual, minimal information on the slide...other than a date of March 1973.

But that setting seemed Indian, and that item left of centre sparked the word "Juggernaut" so off to research that I went.

Yes, Juggernaut was right, and further digging suggested Buddhist Temple, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India.

Interesting.

The Arrival of Cardinal Fang

 

In the small city of  Mosher in South Dakota, there is an annual tradition held on the third Sunday in December. The Mud-Wrestling  battle between the churches.

Originally a personal disagreement between the leads of the Lutheran and Catholic churches, the locals enjoyed the event as a celebration of community, with a evening of prayer and alcohol after the event.  Eventually, the local Rabbi and Sikh Guru got involved, and it became more of a Battle Royale.

Here is the build up to the 1964 event, with the arrival of defending champion, Cardinal Fang, with his seconds Monseigneur Biggles, and Deacon Blue (Actually, high school wrestling coach Bob "Muscles" Flowerdew... yes, a ringer.)

That was all that was on the slide, and the slide was in a box of Wetton - Then and now slides.

Probably a slide of an earlier photo...but could just be a modern recreation.

Anyhoo, I suspect the location is the carpark of The Royal Oak pub.

It's unclear to me whether this is a small religious statue to a saint, which has subsequently lost his head and hand,  or this saint who lost his head and hand has been accurately immortalized in this religious statue.

Sofia and The Festival of St Cyril

Followers of any of the great religions will realise that Sofia is in the parade before the Feast Day Celebration of St Cyril (The Duck Saviour).

His unusual moniker comes from the miracle that he performed, when he re-animated a duck which had been killed, stuffed, roasted in an oven and served in shallot and grape sauce.
The duck then flew off, only to be caught and torn assunder by a passing osprey.

But the miracle stood, and Cyril was canonised and made the Patron Saint of Ducks and other aquatic Anatidae wildfowl.

The Mysterious Stick of Sligo

The Mysterious Stick of Sligo is an enigmatic relic. It dates from the late 1930's, and is believed to have a connection to Neville Chamberlain.

Even more mysterious, it's located in Wolverhampton, and has no known connection to Sligo.

Yes, another deeply tedious slide.

This time, a church-related one.

You'll recall that St Margaret of Scotland was also called Margaret of Wessex.   And was born in Hungary.  Bloody Immigrants !

The Entombment - Moissac

How appropriate.   Had a spare half hour on Good Friday, and decide to scan in a few more slides.

Lo and behold, a most appropriate image appeared.  The Entombment of Christ, carved around 1485, and located in Moissac (presumably in the Abbey.)  More info available here. (My picture was taken in Sept 1990, and may be Left-Right reversed.)
