The Horror of Suburbia

No, it's not CGI. People did used to look like this.

These are the Fanshawe's (pronounced Featherstonehaugh.)

  • Roger is an Investment Banker, in both technical and rhyming slang senses)
  • Julie is a part time teacher who collect knitted toilet paper covers in her spare time
  • Kevin (left) enjoys mathematics, Latin, accountancy and dressing up in mum's clothes.
  • Wolfgang (right) believes he's a changeling, but wants to be a Tax Auditor when he grows up.

The sign in the background appears to be "Curtis Woo...." which makes me this this might be Curtis Wood Park Road in Hern Bay, with it's shitty half-timbered stockbroker houses...Like this  but life is too short to find an exact match.

Celebrate The Suburb

Suburbs get a bad press, really, but they don't really deserve it.

Sure, the only times you see mentions of suburbs in local papers are for headlines like "Small cannabis factory found in Kilmarnock suburb", or "Winchester Suburb names as England's duck-eating hotspot" or "Cardiff Suburb destroyed by Meteor Impact".... but where would most of us be without the suburbs.

Like this suburb being built in 1967.

Struggling To Stand

Heather Smith discovers one of the downside of daytime drinking - she struggles to maintain an upright stance - even with the help of a convenient lamp-post.

Bonus - Not in the mood.

Extra - RIP Frankie.  You were a great cat.

Another view of the Pool Party

Another view of the loungers from yesterday,

Further extensive research has uncovered precisely no more information on the revelers, so I can say with utmost confidence that that's Madeleine Thomson in the red swimsuit.

And for those of you want a closer look...

The Man of Mystery

Before Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery, we had Neville Bounds, Suburban Man of Mystery.

Who knows who he really was, and what his interest in cornflake packets was a cover story for.

The Children's Table

While the adults of the South Dakota Districts Swingers Club hold thei August "Get Together" elsewhere, the kids gather around the picnic table. Much Pepsi-Cola an potato chips were consumed, and Billy Mitchell (in the Daniel Boon coon-skin cap) tells everyone why their teacher Miss Havershaw is actually a communist.

View from the Window

It seemed like a nice quiet town.

Clean, spacious, organised and friendly.

But still, there was that creeping feeling of dread that all the citizens felt.

What was it?

Years later, they realised that the whole town had been built on the largest Native American Graveyard in Utah.

Cue the stereotypical fears and thoughts of "Gateway to Hell".  (Irrelevant. It was actually the seeping Radon gas that was killing them.)
