Yes, the 1968 Grand Prix of international submarine racing. As you see, Capt Horst Holman of the German Submarine Fleet is in Pole Position, and getting final instructions from the pit lane.

Bonus - Dear God. Who would buy this...and why?

Mashed Potatoes

If there was one thing that Vera loved, it was mashed potatoes. While everyone else was sorting out the meat, peas, stuffing and so on, Vera would load her plate with as much of the spuds as she could manage, with that self-satisfied "****-you" on her face.

Bonus - Sorry Mate Your house has been infested with Wombles.

Pretty in Pink

I love these sorts of pictures, but often wonder what happened to the kids in the pics. It would be grand to hear from people now, if only to find out just how dull their lives are now. From the look of this one, it must date from the mid fifties, so the subject boy/girl must be retired now.

Or even dead. How depressing is that ?

Bonus 1 - The Day They Hanged an Elephant in East Tennessee

Bonus 2 - Technically, these would be Safe For Kids, but practically, they're probably Nightmare Fuel.

Not Sleeping, Just Dead

Strange places, gothic chapels.

This place may be creepy, but it's not a patch on Sedlec Ossuary.

Bonus - Parkour Ouch

The Ancient Structure

Unlike yesterday's location, I can make no guesses about this structure - either location or purpose. But...what a fascinating melange of stone blocks - testament to eons of addition and adaptation?

Bonus - Wise words from a fortune cookie...

Bonus 2 - Abandoned Amusement Park

Name That Structure

A slightly unusual view of a VERY well know engineering structure. Something so well known in it's traditional form that this view is a little unexpected and rather pleasant.

Bonus - Cyclist narrowly avoids becoming pizza

Bonus 2 - John Stewart's Animated Take on The Royal Wedding

Ireland (Yes, it is...)

Now this is more like the Ireland that I expected (unlike Monday's). This is the small village of Ballybaloney, which is the closest mainland town to Craggy Island, and famed throughout Ireland for its Duck Impersonating Festival.

Bonus - The strange case of the mystery enema

Bonus 2 - Useful Manuals from Ikea

The Photographers

As today's is my chum Little Ian's birthday, I thought this slide of to photographer enthusiasts trying out some modern tech would be suitable.

Bonus - Addiction Illustrated - it's very difficult to give up. (and I refer to both nicotine and Fluffeh Tiem.)

Show Some Thigh, Maureen

Ah, the early seventies. Era of Glam Rock, Women's Lib and rising hemlines. (Not to be confused with Rising Damp.)

Here, a young dolly bird (vintage slang) shows off her pins.

Bonus - Turning a sphere inside out.

Bonus 2 - Never leave pets unattended in cars.

Not So Brave Now

School Trip to Ibiza, Easter 1973.

Yes, what school trip is complete without a trip to the bull-fight. Even better, get some of the cocksure teens in the same ring as a frisky young bullock.

See how they keep their distance now.

Bonus - Virgin Galactic testing - Including Feathering. For those of you with the attention span of a horny badger, cut to 2:10

Contemplation Time

Another nae bad slide today. Charles in contemplation on the California Coast, beside a cypress cottonwood.

Bonus - History of Planet Earth in 500k (SFK)

The Shadow Beast

A truly terrible tedious slide. The subject, if there is one, is either a black poodle or The Shaggy Beast of Nuneaton

Bonus - Rugby Players - Tough Guys.

Bonus 2 - Remember your pets. Woman makes mummies for bereaved pet owners

Verboden op de Tank te Klimmen

For once, I could tel;l you a lot about this slide. Not just the obvious stuff (it's an M4 "Sherman" tank) but basically a helluva lot. But, rather than plagiarizing, why not just click here.

Bonus - Movie Challenge - Name This Movie

Redneck Kids

A good blogger knows his/her audience, and what they like. Generally, that's people, and especially odd looking kids. This almost made it onto this year's calendar, but not quite clear enough a slide. (too much dust n dirt.)

Still, hick kids - always a winner.

Bonus - A-Ha !

Glorious Perugia

Very atmospheric shot today. Perugia, the Umbrian capital, and home of an annual Chocolate Festival.

The Japanese Bridge

Don't let the Daily Mail know about it.

Monday "Kids' Death Risk Due To Low Bridge Walls"

Now THAT's a Church

Now, I may be a God-Fearing Agnostic (keep my options open), but I prefer my church architecture to be bold and clearly churchy. None of this modern, minimalist, is-it-a-church-or-is-a-B&Q? nondescript crud...I want to see where those peasants' tithes have been spent.

Bonus - I dare say that this church wouldn't approve of this.

Bonus 2 - The Simpsons, the rather disturbing interpretation.

There, On The Horizon - That's Nice

No, seriously. That's the Mediterranean City of Nice. Home of, umm, large expanses of Blue Sky. And Blue Seas. As you can see....

Bonus - The problem with hearing a new band is trying to describe their sound to some one else. Too often, you end up with a clichéd construct like "They're like Pink Floyd, played by a Mariachi Band", and that never really seems right. Well, now there is an answer...

Ireland (Not!)

OK, so a box labeled "Ireland Trip", and full of typically Oirish scenes, I happen across this one.

Hmmm. It doesn't look like Ireland. Did they mean Iceland - actually, nope. Defitinely written Ireland, and anyway, the scenery around Geysir and Strokkur is much less tree-y, as you can see in this 'un..

So, New Zealand or Yellowstone, would be my guesses.

Bonus - Swedish insect shoots larvae into victims' eyes

Swarkestone Bridge

This is the north end of Swarkestone Bridge, an ancient crossing place for the River Trent, just south of Derby (England, not Iowa, USA). It was the most southerly point that Bonnie Prince Charlie's army reached during the 1745 rebellion, before turning back to civilisation.

Bonus - Ah, Star Trek were NOT Involved In Bin Laden Death Mission. Now it can be told...

Flowers and Fuels

Again, what an odd mind set. Did people really think "When I get back home after this trip, people really are going to be waiting for a picture of Mrs Dull, at a petrol station, beside a concrete tub of flowers." ?

Bonus - Referendum day here - this seemed appropriate

Wednesday, 4 May 2011

Two Brothers

Odd thing about this slide collecting lark. I can be going through a box of holiday slides - sea, sky, trees, relatives, tourists, churches, blah, blah, blah - then out pops an excellent shot. Like this.

Bonus - Yugoslav War Memorials. You'll have to trust me on this...but WOW !!

People Photograph The Strangest Things...

For example...this. At first glance, it'#s just a photograph of some ancient floorboards in a cottage bedroom, possibly in..... Hold On.

Under the bedside table ?

....Could that be....

Nope. It's just a lump of wood. Panic over.

Bonus - A not-quite death-defying roller-coaster concept

Bonus 2 - Osama Bin Laden - Death Pic...or not really.

Monday, 2 May 2011

"Smiling "Johnny Johnson

Yes, "Smiling" Johnny Johnson, rhythm guitarist with Glenn Tanner's Oak Forest Boys. And you can see why he earned his nickname.

Bonus - Wild Animal (The Simple Dog Goes for a Joy Ride) (from the ever-amusing Hyperbole and a Half.)

May Day Dances

I would have posted a picture of kids dancing round a May-Pole, but...I don't recall scanning one of them. So, next best thing...school kids practising their sword dancing for the Woodchurch Fayre.

Bonus - Russians. Sure love badly photoshopped wedding pics.
