Ahoy Mates !

Nothing like spending a life on the ocean wave.

Or even just yachting for a weekend.

Actually, I've been reading about The HMS Wager Mutiny and when this slide cropped up, it seemed like serendipity.

The Holiday Trade Show

Possibly the world's least tempting holiday trade show.

However, just left of centre in this slide is Glenda Slagg - Newport's least convincing transvestite hooker - looking for some trade.  Good luck, Honey Bun.

Christmas Present Time.

Of course, you might think it's too early in the year for Christmas slides. However, wandering around Sainsbury's this morning (Gilbert, my Butler, is having his annual day off) I was struck by the number of Christmas Cakes and Mince Pies that were available.

It's only September, goddammit.

Modelling - The Old School Way

Before you whipper-snappers were around, modelling was a real craft. Carefully crafting ribs from balsa, and covering the wings with dope.  No, not that sort of dope,

The registration number, however, appears to be a randomly selected one. The real NC41846 was a Fairchild 24R-40, and many of that family of aircraft still remain flying after 75 years.  This model is clearly not based upon the Fairchild 24.

A result of using an E6 slide technology, but the result is a strangely spectral senior.

TS Queen Mary

For a Tedious Tuesday, this slide is remarkably interesting.

From what I can read on the bow, this could be the "Queen Mary".   A little digging, and it seems to be a good call. It's actually the TS Queen Mary, rather than one of the bigger liners on that name.

Hubert Struck an Odd Heroic Pose

I'm sure very few of you would recognise that literary quote.

And it makes me happy that few people recognise it, but also sad that so few people know the genius of VS.

Miss America 1975, Swimsuit Line Up

Hello Ladies !

A slide from September 1974, and apparently from the Miss America competition.  I see no reason to doubt it, and the date matches up with the Miss America 1975 competition.

There are a few other slides from that event, (and a related event in St Petersburg Florida?) which may be posted in due course.

Enjoy.

One Of My Own

Well, it's slide number 2600, and in response to almost one request, I've decided to post one of my own pictures.   Not one of my best, but hopefully adequate.  And bearing in mind my usual complaints about where n when,

All-In Freestyle Boy-Boy Dancing

One of the lesser-known customs at Harvard, All-In Freestyle Boy-Boy Dancing is a competitive sport which can lead to ...erm... long term friendships.

Here we see Tim "Duke" Hyde grappling with Cedric "Boris" Backman (hidden) under the the careful eye of Mr J Chatterjee.

Beached

Whether by luck or judgement, this slide was underexposed to just the right amount to create an atmospheric image.

It even works well as a retro sepia tones image.

It's difficult to believe ...

...but one of this grew up to become a major pop superstar,

Which one of the four ?

Which Pop Star?  Is it Madonna?   Taylor Swift?    Maria Carey?  Annie Lennox ? ... Justin Bieber??

You may find out sometime.

The Ghost In The Machine

Yes, another medical slide, and to my untrained eye it appears to be a torso / spine.

The post's title just came to me in a flash, and it's worth having a read of the Wikipedia article. The title is a phrase coined by the Oxford philosopher Gilbert Ryle to describe the Cartesian dualist account of the mind–body relationship. Koestler shares with Ryle the view that the mind of a person is not an independent non-material entity, temporarily inhabiting and governing the body.

It's also an Album by The Police, which has my fave track of theirs.

It's The Little Things...

Sometimes, it's the little things you notice.

In this image, it was the door, and specifically the side that the hinge is on.

Most doors I've seen in real life have had the hinge on the frame furthest from the wall. Here...it isn't.  I wonder if it's a UK / US things, or is it history.

30 minutes of Googling, I can find no information.  Damn.

At Lake Koobaroomba

It was a tradition of the Drexel family to spend summer in the county, usually at their retreat beside Lake Koobaroomba. The name originates from the Algonquin Indian word for Watery Grave Beside The Dung Pile, which may hav been appropriate.

The Gleckit Wedding

For the benefit of our lesser readers, "gleckit" is a North East Scottish word, roughly translating as "Stupid, foolish, thoughtless", tho' I've usually heard it with an implication of empty-headedness, or "nae blessed with good looks" sense.

Still, they seem happy. But then again, they share the same parents and grandparents.

It's a tough life being a professional winkle-picker.  Roy Thompson (shown in the adjacent picture) can travel for days after a tip-off of winkles being spotted...only to be disappointed when it turns out to be just a limpet.

A tough, soul-destroying life.

That's a Schwefelgelbe Anemone, and it should look like this.
