Look ! It's a .... Tram !

A stereo-typically dull slide.

And yet...there's a nugget of interest.  I thought I could identify the city involved via the unusual shop name of Rapetth.

Google doesn't really recognize that word.  How curious.

Bonus - How dangerous is stoned driving?

So says Mrs Edith Gonk, of Rotherham.

Bonus - Well Played, mysterious troll.

Willow Tree Fountain

Once again, all it took was a quick glance at this slide, and I said "I know that ".

Today has been the hottest July day in Britain, since records began, with temperatures hitting 38.1ÂșC in Cambridge.

While I had the luxury of an air-conditioned office (Yay for me), it would have been most pleasant to sit under this Willow Tree Fountain in Chatsworth Park in Derbyshire.

Darkness In His Heart

I'm not sure if this is a badly exposed photograph, or a stylish, artistic slide.

You could help me decide.

Bonus - Do you have trouble sleeping due to recurrent dreams?

You may now.

Samara

Today's Word - Samara.

A samara is a winged achene, a type of fruit in which a flattened wing of fibrous, papery tissue develops from the ovary wall. A samara is a simple dry fruit and indehiscent (not opening along a seam). The shape of a samara enables the wind to carry the seed farther away than regular seeds from the parent tree, and is thus a form of anemochory.

This, I would suggest, is a Sycamore Seed which is a Samara.

Bonus 1 - The famous "Poop Knife" story.

Property of William E Baskett

"Property of William E Baskett"

That's what written on the slide, I'm extrapolating that that's Mr and Mrs Baskett, and they're showing the world their latest purchase.  Fresh from the baby markets of Hanoi, here we have William Jr, formerly Hwa Hong.

The Joy Of Beach Fishing

The slide is stamped as March 1974, and it certainly looks like this is not a summer holiday activity (unless they're in Scotland).

They must be bloody mad.

Bonus - Scotland’s drug-related death toll has increased by 27% over the past year to reach a record high of 1,187, putting the country on a par in terms of the fatality rate per capita with the United States

The Art of Camouflage

In this slide, (right) there are in fact FOUR Chieftain Tanks.

Two are relatively easy to spot, but spotting the final pair is definitely a test for the optics.

And no checking for Infra-Red signatures.

Chatsworth Lawn

So, last night, I started scanning a fresh batch of slides (Yeah, crazy Saturday Night) and realised - "Hey, I've been there".

Yes, a quick glance made me realise it was Chatsworth House, in Derbyshire.  The rest of the slides were an odd mix of Venice, France, Switzerland and Italian Alps...but this was Derbyshire.    Someone's European tour, I suppose.

The Norfolk Alps

The alpine region of Norfolk is one of England's Hidden Treasures.

Rarely acknowledged in the guidebook, the region East of Cromer is home to Englands only glacier, and the Royal Retreat of Wroy Castle (shown in the slide).

Well worth a visit.

Bonus - Juggling from above

The Dover Stage Hotel

A striking example of post-war modern architecture, this is "Stage" as in coach-house rather than "Stage" as in full of resting theatrical types.

One of the joys of this slide collecting lark is finding a detail, such as the name on the building, and finding that it leads to other people's obsessions  - such as this page devoted to The Dover Stage Hotel.  Good work fellas.

Alas, I have no other details on when this was taken.

Bonus - while Neil Armstrong was on the moon the Soviets crash landed an explorer just 500 miles away.

He's Happy Because He Eats Lard

He'll be lauded by the British Lard Marketing Council.

Me?  'Im happy as this appears to be blog slide number 4000 !

Google, however, suggest that this is blog post number 3956.

The reason for the discrepancy....I dunno.

Commonly referred to as Mismatched Knees, the affliction affects approximately one in 20 men, and in severe cases can result in a lack of confidence when wearing Hot Pants and Pantyhose.

So, on went his girdle, pancake make-up and falsies, and ta-da... Margueritte Dumas !

Didn't full anyone, and he was shot coming out of the gents. Rookie mistake.

Ostracized On A Rock

When the small Norwegian community of Skoglholt  found out about the unnatural desires of the threesome of Agnes, Marta and Carlos, they subjected then to the most severe punishment that their church.

They were stranded on a rock in the stream for a period of three hours, one summer afternoon.

It is a very silly punishment.
