Wilbur, Living His Dream

After retirement, every Thursday and Sunday, Wilbur <Name Redacted> gets in his car, and drives 12 miles down to the riverbank, and spends an hour shouting incoherently at the seagulls and pigeons.

Eventually, all the birds leave. He then gets back in his car, with a wide grin, and drives back home. It's what he wants, and who am I to criticise.

Bonus-

Arthur, Living The Dream

After a lifetime of work, slogging in the Paprika mines of Wisconsin, Arthur enjoys his retirement on his speedboat "The Saucy Slaughter-Girl".

Bonus - bears at Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in Montana have jobs: try to open coolers / dumpsters / containers of treats. If bears can't make more than a tiny hole, the item is certified bear-proof. The GWDC is the only place where products can earn a certificate from the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee.

An (Un)Natural Arch

Although the slide was unlabelled, I believe that this may be the road through Red Canyon, in the Dixie National Forest, un Utah.

Some stock picture libraries label this as a Natural Arch, but ...I think not. Anyone know for sure?

Bonus -

Dinner with the Muldoons

This slide perplexes me. Yes, it's a meal out with two middle aged couples, but...

Where?    They seem to be squeezed between two wooden wardrobes. Possible the LH wardrobe has a mirror, accounting for the light over Mildred Muldoon's face.

And.... cutlery. It seems a little haphazard. Fish knife for Maurice Muldoon, but the plates seem rather "dessert-y".

Odd.

Bonus - Sadly, RIP Cloris Leachman.

Name That Olympic Venue

As written on the slide itself...

Helsinki - stadium tower and Paavo Nurmi

Yes, in 1952 Helsinki hosted the XV Summer Olympic Games. The stadium was completed in 1938 for the 1940 Olympics, alas an event called WW" intervened.

The tower of the stadium, a distinct landmark with a height of 72.71 metres (238.5 ft), a measurement of the length of the gold-medal win by Matti Järvinen in javelin throw of 1932 Summer Olympics.

Bonus - Gentlemen. There is a white rabbit in this picture. No really. There is.

The Result of "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY"

Many many tourist attractions have signs saying"No Flash Photography", to reduce the amount of annoyance to other visitor, but still some people think that their camera will produce a masterpiece, even in the absence of light.

This slide one the result. Allegedly of Toulouse Cathedral, it could actually be almost anything....anywhere.

Bonus - Willem Dafoe Skewers Method Acting in 'Shadow of the Vampire'

Bonus 2 -

Monday 25 January 2021

Glacier, Cloud and Spider

I do hope that's an out of focus small spider, very close to the camera.

If it's a monstrously large spider, emerging thru' the fog, then ... AARRGGHH!

Bonus - Tonight is Burns Night, so...

Address to a Trumpie

Fakaff  ta' your orange, sonsie face,

Former chieftain o the yankee'-race!

  Wi' your latest paid-for wife

An' prepare for prison fer life.

Sand and Pick-Ups.

I toyed with the idea of labelling this as being Mexicans flooding into USA after the new POTUS Joe Bden flung open the borders....but I realised that some Trumpette would take that as fact.

Nope, no idea where or when, but that seems a very dark "sand". I wonder where it really is.

Bonus - Damn!

Saturday 23 January 2021

Snow Biking

Flurries of snow outside mean I can't go for my usual 60 mile bike-ride, so this vintage slide will have to do. A youngling with a "You'll grow into it" bike, and a Grandpa in proper winter-wear. None of the modern technical alpine-wear, suitable for an assault on The Matterhorn.

Bonus 1 - Sri Lanka's health minister, who endorsed herbal syrup to prevent Covid, has tested positive for the virus

Bonus 2 -     It's hideous, but I want it.

Thursday 21 January 2021

One for you Vertigo Sufferers

You're Welcome.

Yes, predictable trolling from the slide-meister, but I need to amuse myself.

Some of you will recognize this view as being from the cable-car which climbed Mount Ain, just outside Norwich, in Norfolk.   The cable car was dismantled in 1977 after Mount Ain was washed away in a heavy thunderstorm.

Bonus - Best Surprise Ever.

Wednesday 20 January 2021

An American Tragedy

Perhaps an overly-dramatic title for this slide, but maybe I was referring to the American Tragedy which was Donald J Trumps term as POTUS. It ends today, with the expected tantrums. Bye-bye Donald - please just head off into the sunset.

Bonus - First preserved dinosaur butthole is 'perfect' and 'unique,' paleontologist says.

Tuesday 19 January 2021

Kids in the Park

I'm sure that the two tykes in this picture would be fascinated to see this picture. They'd now be in their sixties, probably, and might even remember the occasion.

Alas, the photographer, or their successors saw fit to get rid of these slides, and make a quick buck on eBay. Tough Lucks kids.

Bonus -

Monday 18 January 2021

Surprised Kitty

Everyone loves pictures of kittens. However, this kitty is still rather traumatized by being mistaken for a novelty pajama case. Ouch.

Bonus -

Sunday 17 January 2021

On the Fortifications

Written on the slide today : Wadi Musa, so we're looking at the early history of Jordan. Obviously.

There's something satisfying about these stone walls.. Nice.

The Bridal Show

" And here we have the blushing bride Melody. She's wearing a lovely dress of insect-processed mulberry leaves, also known as silk, and a veil which has been made made underpaid slave labour in a Mexican sweatshop.

And don't get me started on that mauve monstrosity that the slutty bridesmaid is wearing."

Bonus - Mutant Covid Strains, Trump Supporting invading Washington. Well, what else could go wrong?

Tapeworm Spreads Deadly Cancer to Human.  I'm sorry I asked.

The Lion, and The Lunch

The good old days of zoos, and the good old days of customer safety.

While it must be hell being a zoo exhibit in the modern world, it must have been far far worse in the past.

Bonus - This Samurai Model

Origami, and a single sheet of paper.  Info

The Three Seals of Approval

Keen zoologists will recognise these as being Hapsberg Seals, the only seals native to Austria.   Usually found need Innsbruck, these ones are actually in the Secret Zoo in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte.

Bonus - A forest of immensely tall and unusually straight oak trees planted nearly 200 years ago to build naval ships that never came to be.

Bonus 2 - Happy Birthday Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips !

Tuesday 12 January 2021

And This ... This is the Bedroom

This might appear to be from the secret stash of a very obsessive stalker...

... but it isn't.

The box of slide shows a middle aged couple having a holiday break in northern part of Derbyshire in 1987. And the photographed almost everything they saw.

Very dull.

Bonus - 1001 Albums to listen to before you dye.

Monday 11 January 2021

The Conglomerate of Cushendun

Not the name of one of the minor princes in Game Of Thrones, this refers to the geological material,  clastic sedimentary rock that is composed of a substantial fraction of rounded to subangular gravel-size clasts. In this case, it's specifically the outcrop near Cushendun, in Northern Ireland.

Actually, it is reported that Cushendun Caves was used as a filming location for Game Of Thrones. Interesting.

Bonus - People Call This the Anti-Gluttony Door

Life's A Beach

But it appears that 2020 was a beach located to a sewage outflow, and 2021 might be worse.

Bonus - Woman believed to be last remaining widow of US civil war soldier dies

Bonus 2 - A nugget of good news. The 2,000-mile “Yellowstone to Yukon” corridor helps grizzlies and wolverines safely follow their migration rates through populated areas.

Friday 8 January 2021

The Start of a Coffee Addiction

Yes, the exact moment that little Poppy popped the lid off a time of fresh ground coffee, inhaled and .... a life-long appreciation of Coffee.

Truly, the drink of the Gods.

Bonus - from 1963!

Thursday 7 January 2021

Mr & Mrs King

Celebrating 48 years of married bliss, Mr & Mrs Jeremy King pose for a slide.  I guess that the main slide would have been from a closer position, as Jeremy is a little self-conscious about his shortness.

Bonus - I'm going to avoid talking about Trump's Mob, but...

Wednesday 6 January 2021

The Audience Go Wild !

Usually, there's little written on a slide to help identify it, but on the most recent box of mixed slides, there were a lot with scrawled information. In this case,

Putting on show at Maori after concert

...which helps a little.

Bonus - Denmark launches children's TV show about man with giant penis

Tuesday 5 January 2021

Tedium Time

Yes, it's Tedious Tuesday again. The time for the non-creme-de-la-creme of slides. As usual, it's interesting to speculate why a slide shot was taken, and why it was kept.

In this case, I'm guessing that it was an insurance protection - in the event of theft, then the police would have something definitive to look for. Nice thinking. Maybe I should do the same.

Bonus - Not Safe For Kids / Narrow-Minded Christians.   Richard Dawkins reading some of the letters and emails sent to him.  Wow.  Haters Gotta Hate !

Monday 4 January 2021

"We're not in Norfolk any more Toto"

Unless Norfolk has been subjected to tremendous Plate Tectonic forces recently, this is not the area around Norwich.

My guess is Switzerland, but ... do you know?

Bonus - There's something about this 100 year old pic...

Sunday 3 January 2021

Hanging Around The Air-Strip

I've just been watching The Queen's Gambit on Netflix. Excellent, and highly recommended.  And the general mood for the 1960's episodes matches up quite well with this completely unrelated slide,

Bonus - Time to take down the Chrimbo Decorations...

Saturday 2 January 2021

More of the Same

After the popularity of yesterday's Party Pic (I received just less than one email on the subject) I thought, Let's try the same again.  So, here we have Governor Hiram"BloodAx" Schenkelmen. I'll let you ponder how he got that nickname.

Bonus - A horrifying thought...

Friday 1 January 2021

Happier New Year

Yes, it HAS been an odd year, but things should be getting better.

But lets look back to New Years Eve 1966, and a time when the biggest fear was Mrs McGovern's impromptu strip tease, accompanied by "Bobo" Wilson after 3 lessons on the banjo. While being watched by a sailfish suffering from locked-in syndrome.   Oh, and the ever present threat of all-out nuclear war.

Happier days.

Bonus - the SS Warrimoo, a ship which simultaneously crossed the International Date Line and Equator at 12 am on 31 Dec 1899 thus placing her in two different seasons, in two different hemispheres, on two different days, in two different months, in two different years, in two different centuries.

Bonus 2 -
