"Progress In The City"

Looking at this slide, I can imagine the bored lecturer at Croydon Tertiary College, standing in front of the Art and design 101 class, saying "And as your first assignment, grab a amera, and head off outside, and photograph something on the theme of Progress in the City. Be back here in 6 hours, and tomorrow we develop the films."

Voila !

Myrtle Beach 1982

Bank Holiday Monday, here in the UK. (I guess that USA and other former colonies have Public Holidays or something.)

So, I bet people have been taking the chance for a inal visit to the beach ... which links in to this 49 year old slide from South Carolina.

"This One Is For Granny"

OK, there's some hints that this could be a Christmas photo, but, dammit, it looks hotter than my summers.

Always a great cliche to have the kids dress up as cowboys and smile for granny.

Freddie the Fashionista

Yesterday, we had Jo modelling her casualwear. Freddie took that picture.

Today we have roles reversed, with Freddie modelling a drab brown sweater, and Jo driving the 35mm rangefinder camera.

And they're still in Devon.

Jo's Devon Trip (again)

Continuing our retro hipster fashions series, here we have Jo posing for her (his?) significant other, and practising her Kay Catalogue posing skills.

I guess the unisex look was cool back in the mid sixties.

Hipster Fashion Throwback

Funny thing about fashions.

Wait 30 or sixty years, and things become fashionable again.

Like Nancy's checkered golf slacks, and Troy's patterned shirt.  Probably trendy for influencers nowadays.

Bonus - Thanks to JayN, I've been heading down the punk nostalgia rabbit hole.  eg  The Dead Kennedys Kill The Poor.

You'd assume that anyone going through a graduation would be slightly happy, but this 'ere Herbert seems to be the exception.

Perhaps the lowest-scoring student has to wear the Blue Gown of Shame.

Or, to be more honest, a Sopwith Camel replica.

Googling suggest that it might belong to the RAF Museum at Cosford, but It's not the Camel that is usually on display.

What in the Flub...?

Regular readers (both of them) will be aware that I often become obsessed with details in the background...and today is no different.

There's a band or musical group in the background, and the squeeze-box is easy to spot.

But what are the other two guys playing? It looks like some sort of snorkel-kazzoo, or maybe some sort of jew's harp?

Can anyone help?

Normal Service Has Been Resumed

And here's a picture of a Funny Looking Kid to celebrate.

Thank You Virgin Media for eventually solving their problem. It's a pity that outages happen, and it's a pity that I have to spend cold hard cash to cope with such extended periods, but at least the issue was sorted within 36 hours.

Young Gerald at Play

Ir was only when I played with the contrast / lighting of the slide that I realised that Gerald was accompanied by a large black ... Rooster.

It was tempting to post something about BBC...but no. I'm not that childish.

Martha, outside the Summer Cottage

Martha is the daughter of the fabulously rich merchant banker Charles Heatherington-Whipple, and is pictured posing outside her family's modest retreat in The Hamptons. The family are so rich that they've purchased the cleansing of the internet, so you won't find any information on Google about Charles, Martha, or their drug-fueled Summer expeditions to Greenland..

It must be nice to be that rich.

Prom Queen of Yesteryear

Alas, even with the best will in the world, not every old slide is a  classic.

This slide, labelled as Prom June-56 Me and Mom, is faded, speckled and unfocused. Even with a mild bit of noise removal, and correction, it will never be as good as intended.

But, it captures an important moment is a girls life, and can never be recaptured. Sixty Five years on... I wonder what happened to them.

Praise Be for little old ladies who take once-in-a-lifetime voyag

Or Praise Be to Edith for short.

In this case :

Rufus, the Polar Bearhound.

It was the days before genetic / DNA testing, so no-one is really sure what Rufus was.

The story is that he just turned up in Fairbanks, Alaska, and was adopted by the local vet. Some said that he was a chunky, albino Golden Retriever, while others said that he was a freaky progeny of a Polar Bear and a Norwegian Elkhound.
Before there could be any scientific investigation, Rufus wandered off and was last seen on a plane to Wisconsin.

The Greek Sector of Antarctica

One of the lesser known research stations on Antarctica is The Spartan Station in the Greek Zone.

The story of why Greece has a small patch of the southernmost continent is strange enough, but even more incredible is the frosty dome that covers the 23 squ km Greek Zone, which allows the use of geothermal heating to create a microclimate biome, as shown here.

At some later date, I shall reveal more of this magical area.
