Horses on the Horizon

I gave that title to the blog-post because there are horses pictured on this slide.

There ... on the horizon.

Bonus - Alys Tomlinson's photos of traditional community festivals in Sardinia and the Venetian lagoon islands

The Penguin Pool

Hopefully, this is the sort of concrete hell zoo enclosure that has been consigned to history.

And for all the folks saying that "Kids were better behaved when I was young", the sign on the right says.

" PENGUIN POOL
Visitors are asked to
stop children throwing
stones, bricks, paper, etc
as these can kill the
penguins.
King Penguins
Humbolot'
Penguins
From 5 Antartic
regions."
Bricks?  What the **** is wrong with people?

Kuta Beach, Bali, 1985

The slide was marked as "June 85 Bali, Kutri Beach", but I'm fairly sure that they meant Kuta Beach.

I was wondering how much this view has changed in the last 38 years, but there's something about the Google Streetview that looks suspicious.

Bonus - for non UK visitors, Fiona Phillips is a D-List Celebrity, of no known talent.

Family Picnic

I know that it's only late February, but I am looking forward to picnics in the sunshine with friends and family.

Bonus - Asking the important questions.  Why do some feces float and others sink?

Death On Two Wheels

...or to be more precise, Mr Wilfred De'Ath, on his moped. And wearing his safety Kevlar Bermuda Shorts.

In Fact, the fact that he's riding on the left does make me think that the location could be Bermuda.

If I squint, the shop sign in the background could be "Glendale<something> Store  Ice Cream Parlour"
...but I won't guarantee it.  Alas, Google doesn't turn up much on the subject.

Gold? Gold. Gold! GOLD!

There's gold in them thar Museums.

Bonus - Operation Popeye was a military cloud-seeding project carried out by the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War in 1967–1972. The highly classified program attempted to extend the monsoon season over specific areas of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, in order to disrupt North Vietnamese military supplies by softening road surfaces and causing landslides.

Daisy Chain (No, the decent sort.)

If you were to Google for two teenage girls, making a Daisy Chain, there is a chance that you might encounter some modern slang terminology.

That would not be wise, in a home or office scenario.

Bonus - ...and in the news today "The analysis has revealed it to be, at the very least, the first known example of a disembodied phallus made of wood recovered anywhere in the Roman world."

A Swinging Good Time

Does anyone actually read the description / drivel that I put beside the slide?

Thelma at Badger's Beck

At the northwest corner of the London Olympic Venue, Badger's Beck is one of the last remaining patches of Wilderness in Greater London. It's also the last remaining breeding ground for The Azure Freshwater SeaHorse, so is now cordoned off from the masses.

However, in this vintage slide, we see Thelma O'Grady, just about to plunge into The Pool, as was the custom of the day.

Photography - The Old Fashioned Way

Before iPhone's 99 Terapixel camera...

Before Sony Mavica digital cameras

Before Kodachrome

Before 35mm film format.

THIS is how photographs were taken. And No, that's not a pair of iPhones at the photographer's foot.

Bonus - Mondrian painting has been hanging upside down for 75 years

Large Phallic Grain Silos

When some concrete grain silos are worth taking a picture of, you KNOW that you're on a boring coach trip.

Bonus - Continuing the Newspaper teaser" images, from today's Guardian.

Happy Valentine's Day

Whether you are starry eyes young teens, or grizzled old prunes, have a great day.

Here, Edgar and Molly spend their 60th St Valentines Day together, revisiting the dockside when Molly worked, and Edgar found out that she could do .... that .... thing.... with he tongue.... just like his mother used to do.

Ahhh. Memories.

Bonus -

Valentine's Day ???

Rosie amongst the roses.

I wonder if I could locate the date and location of this picture, using the limited visible clues such as garden contents and background housing?

Nah. Probably not.

"I Got A Camel for the Wife, Today..."

"That was a good trade."

"Yeah. Hope the camel is a better cook than the wife."

Bonus - In 1945, a father and his young son set out across the Bering strait, fleeing soviet Russia for a better life in America. Neither knew how perilous their journey would become.

Nijo Castle Visit

Gotta be grateful for small mercies.

Like people who write "Kyoto - Nijo Castle Lisette" on slides, which allows me to confirm that this is Nijo Castle.

Again, not that it bothers me, but I am struck by the possibility that "Lisette" is in fact in possession of a functioning penis.

Bonus - America !

Hohe Domkirche St. Petrus Kölner Dom

Even without some writing on the slide, it would not be hard to name this location.

Cologne Cathedral ... an absolutely stunning construction, which survived WW2 thanks to it's use as a obvious landmark for navigating bombers. Allegedly.

Bonus - In memory of the recently deceased Burt Bacharach, here are Love, performing My Little Red Book.

One Mile East of The Middle of Nowhere

Yup.    Nothing much to see here.

And the local bus only visits every 7 weeks.

Quiet.

Bonus - Probably the only cartoon I've read that includes the phrase "Octopus Sex Bus."

Bonus 2 - Nappetizer.

Venice Traffic Lights.

You know, I hadn't thought about this before. Are there traffic lights on the canals of Venice.

As this slide shows, the answer is yes. But, is it a practical solution?

It takes a lot of energy to accelerate a boat up to a speed, and Italian drivers usually love speed. So, I suspect that the traffic lights are ignored, and serve only as a distraction for tourists.

Thoughts?

The Badlands of Lincolnshire

Lincolnshire, England, has generally been portrayed as a flat, boring featureless park of these septic isles. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Just outside Spalding is "England's Grand Canyon", a 34 mile stretch of the River Tiddle, carving it's route through the sandstone hills of The Kersal Massive".

This slide shows Mt Monty Nodule, at one of the viewing platforms.
