Rock Fans

A wonderful slide, but alas, no information.  Looks early 1950's to me, and that seems a fairly photogenic location but Google doesn't help much.

Google suggests it might be Balanced Rock, nr Colorado Springs.... but it doesn't look right to me. (NB : the image might be left-right mirrored.)

Anyone have a suggestion?

The Parapets

OK. So I THINK I see the parapets of a star-shaped fort, but I can't be certain, and would not like to guess which one.

No Hear...No Speak...No See

No info on the slide, other that "Nikko" and 1969, but many of the slides in that box had a definite "Japanese" look. It didn't take long to track it down to being the Toshogu Shrine.  The Shinkyu or Sacred Stable is relatively plain – probably the least adorned building in Tosho-gu. Yet it contains its most famous single carving, that of the Three Wise Monkeys:

The Reluctant Pool-Gazers

They seem a little worried by what is in the pool. No wonder...it's a baby Kraken in there,

Seconds later, little Maggie was dragged into the pool.

Chez Moi, from the western gazebo.

It's simple, but I call it "Home".

OK, that's a lie. It's Leeds Castle. In Kent.

Pegboard Art Shop

To most people, Vinnie's Art Shop was a source of moderately prices artwork, painted by Art School students, desperate for their art to be displayed on crappy peg-board, and sold for a few dollars.

To those in the know, Vinnie was a great money launderer, able to legitimise reasonable amounts of criminal cash.

Rather like the modern art world.

Not sure I WANT to know what this is...

From a box of medical illustrations and images, and almost certainly an x-ray.

But of what?

I don't know, and I doubt if knowing the answer would improve my life.

If you know...keep it to yourself.

Artistic Scene - Number 871

In contrast to yesterday's slide, where I could tell you where, when and why, ... today's slide is devoid of any info. Not even a slide processing date. Enjoy.

Somewhere Exotic.... or Liverpool?

The only info on this slide was a date of 1984, but I figured I could work out where this was.

While the weather and building on the right seemed quite exotic, and potentially non-British, the hot air balloons had UK company logos. And "Pork Farms" seemed to be an unlikely international brand. Indeed - UK registered. So, acting on a hunch, I had a search for a particular event from that era, and

Yes, it's the Liverpool International Garden Festival. And that building on the right did exist. (Picture 7 of 40). The Liverpool International Garden Festival in 1984 was an attempt by the Conservative government to bring tourism to Liverpool to try and regenerate the city. And yes, I can even date this to the 28th or 29th July.

The Pink House in the Snow.

No info, but it didn't take much effort to figure out that this is the Dairy Cottage at Belvoir Castle. (Pronounced Beaver...and you can see it peeking above the tree on the right.)

Not much else to say.

Flat 1.

I'm sure that the original photographer has a more poncey title for this slide (sumfink like

"The inevitable collapse of a Theocratic Omniverse in the face of Rustic Rhinoplasty"

but "Flat 1." seems good enough for me.

I mean, it's head is the same size as the adult's.

Of course, maybe it's just a small adult. Or perspective.

Either way...something seems off here.

The Scowl of the Dragon-Woman

You would NOT want to mess with the lady in the centre. One wrong word, and you'd be turned into a newt until you'd learned some manners. Young Olaf (on the right) spend his birthday as a woodlouse after complaining about the present that granny had brought.

Slide is marked Oslo Folks Museum, 1966, and I would not disagree. (The Norwegian Museum of Cultural History.)

Possibly the least successful product to appear on BBC2's Dragons Den.

It was not.  No wi-fi signal.

Some Sort of Locomotive

I'm sure that some UK rail enthusiast could tell you all about where, what when and why.

But I can't.

Bonus - Stupidest Conspiracy Theory I've heard of.... Western dairy manufacturers put pigs milk in cheese to prevent Muslims from going to heaven after they die. This is absurd because pigs are super hard to milk; their milk isn't a whole lot per pig; it lasts hours, not days; and their milk tastes like tor tar smells.

The Wines of Europe

I've previously mentioned that Americans love fishing and parades, with numerous slides for both events.

Well, America doesn't have the monopoly on street parades, and this slide dates from 1970s England (I think).

Back when wine drinking was still frightfully posh, so the vintners took any opportunity to promote their vinos.

The Alleged Magic of Steam

I know that for a number of "men of a certain age", steam railways are a source of fascination.

Not me.  I can't really see the attraction.

Thus, I can tell you nowt about this slide's subject. (Actually, Google suggests that it might be the Talyllyn Railway in southern Snowdonia, but .... yeah. Seems possible.

Anyone sick of Christmas Slides?

Well, this one might be the last one for a while.  (But maybe...)

This one had almost no information, except was in the beryl Blood collection, and in a box marked "Beppo and Wales".  I surmise that the ugly, boss-eyed pug is Beppo.

As usual, my eye is drawn to the drinks trolley, and recognise a bottle of Warninks Advocaat...which "Mother" is happily slurping on.

Anyone for a cuppa?

My first thought was regarding the rarity of seeing tea and teapots in American culture, especially in Christmas scenes.

Then I realised. Christmas, reindeer, flying reindeer (!) and mushrooms. That's probably a teapot filled with physoactive mushroom liquor.  More info here

The Mystery Harbour

Probably the most common phrase on this blog is "I have no information on this slide".

As it's true again.  A mysterious square image slide (probably 126 format ektachrome...too small to be 127) with a plain, unwritten frame.

But, using the power on The Interweb and Cheese, I think's I've located the harbour in question.

Mevagissey Harbour. Possibly from this location.

Too Much Contrast

Full marks to the original photographer for trying to create an artistic twilight shot.

Alas, the dynamic range was beyond teh capabilities of Ektachrome, and the lower third was dark. Very dark.

So, I tried to correct the photo....with only so-so results.
