The Painted Sky

One of the surprising things I've in this odd hobby of mine is just how few "Pretty Sunsets" I've ended up with. I was expecting a large proportion of slide sets to have some Sunset We Saw On Our Holidays slides.

But no. Very few.  Which makes this one quite welcome.

The Ominous alley

Anyone else get a feeling of utter dread from this photo ?

Look Germanic to me, but I have no infor at all about this one.

Psychedelic Minis

After the lads' restrained "hobnail boots and tank top" fashion statements on yesterday's slide, today we have the girls' turn.

Oh boy. Now THAT's bright !

The Jersey Boys

Ah, Fifties Nostalgia.

Jersey, I believe, and from the look at the greenhouses I the background (and in other shots), I suspect that Archie, Billy, Chas and Doug are tomato pickers. Of if you're Dan Quayle Tomatoe Pickers.

Although Billy's shirt is dangerously close to being a bit "hippy-ish", the four guys seem to be good buddies. But then again, why wouldn't they?  The sun's shining, they're picking tomatoes and...they have a Top Shed. "Gorseland" might be a Jersey version of Rosebud, and may be a reminder of their happy childhood days.

The Kids in America !

To prove I read your comments (they're always welcome), here's anotehr Kiddie Shot.

Clearly the Moms and Pops have annexed the sofa so they can drink beers, and talk about how the neighbour hood is going to the dogs. So... the kids have the carpet. The lovely, stylish carpet. And thie box of Chocolate Snaps.

I wonder... what happened to them all ?

Bridge to Nowhere

Could this be anywhere except America ?  The vast acreage of clear blue sky, the snow-capped mountains (Rockies, Sierra Nevada ?) beside the open plane. The utilitarian bridge, level with the surrounds.  Utah, I reckon.

Hang on.  Slide has Norfolk written on it.                   Joke.

Carribean Wedding Feast

From a box that seemed to document a carribean wedding for some white Americans, here's a snap of the guys who made it all happen.

Love the smug grin of the chef on the right.

Three Tykes on a Traction

QuintessentiallyBritish. Traction engines.

I just can't imagine any other nation getting moist and emotional over a bunch of hulking great lumps of steel. Perhaps a few of the former colonies, but can you imagine the Brazilians (for example) caring for Traction Engines ?

This is Drumtochty, a ten-ton engine by Davey Paxman, built in 1916. So there.

More Funghi

More funghi. What is it about mushroom hunters ?

Do mushroom hunters enjoy taking slides, or is it keen photographers who are drawn to photograhing funghi. Either way... I like this shot.

The Wall

It's The Wall.

And, yes, from the other pictures in the series, I do believe that it's Hadrian's Wall.

The Talent Show 4

It's been a while since the last talent show slide, but I hope it's been worth the wait.

Human Clown Puppets - If these chaps appeared on The X Factor, or similar shite TV, they'd instantly win the publics vote, but be reduced to tears by merciless Simon Cowell. In revenge, the clowns would appear in his dreams, slowly destroying his sanity.  Well, I can wish.

More Flowers

Spring has arrived here at Chez SlideGuy, so have some pretty flowers.

Portrait of Granny with Clan

As promised, Granny's been surrounded by the clan. All the kids, grandkids and great grandkids. No wonder she looks pleased.

Actually, thay's exactly the same look as yesterday's shot. If it wasn't for the slight movement of her hands, then I might start thinking weird thoughts....

In fact...I wonder. Same pose, similar view point...I wonder...

Yes...ghost clan!

Portrait of Granny in Field

Yup.  Granny in a field.

So, where's the rest of the brood ?

Find out tomorrow.

The Cloisters

Today's Interesting Word - Cloister

A cloister (from Latin claustrum) is a covered walk with an open colonnade on one side, running along the walls of buildings that face a quadrangle or garth. The attachment of a cloister to a cathedral or church usually indicates that it is (or was once) part of a monastic foundation.

Shoddy Lawn

After the excitement (?) of the past few days, it's time to settle down with a truly tedious slide. This is an utterly manky lawn, and any gardener should be ashamed of it. Even worse, there appears to be a "feature plant" in the middle of it (in line with the front wheels.) that looks like an abandoned stick.    2/10 from the garden judges.

Posing in the Woods

So, what is that building ?  It's bitchin !

Home...suspect not. Church...nah.  School?  Hmmmmm Possibly.

So, the two subjects :   Mother and Son ? - So why outside a school?       Brother and Sister ?  Too big an age gap.

Teacher and pupil?  I guess so, but why just the one pupil.  I'm guessing that little Roger's family was about to move out of state, and wanted one last picture with his favourite teacher. Yes....I'm sticking with that.

Mildred and Mammy

OK. Maybe I'm being a bit racist, but the lady on the left does seems to fit into the "Devoted Black Maid/Housekeeper" stereotype, and the lady on teh right does look like the stereotypical  Southern WASP wife, who happens to be "in the Family Way".

Still...crackin' house coat, Mildred.

"Hello Ladies !"

Now you can see why Maude was all aquiver with anticipation... Milton is the Demi-God of Lurve !

Poised seductively on the bed, Milton is ready for action.  Probably Bowling action.

Maude's Motel Moment

A welcome return from our Old Maid Maude. Out on a road trip with Milton, Maude takes a moment to fully read the "What's On in East Westville !" notes from the Motel Owners.

Perhaps they'll just spend the evening at the Motel, checking the Gideon's Bible for errors. Tomorrowm we might see Milton in camera !

The Flower Flamenco

Francine seems to be dancing the flamenco opposite a clump of flowers. Why?

Why not ??

Friends of China Club

One of the intriguing parts of this hobby (well, intriguing to me) is that a single slide can lead to a bit of serious Googling.

For example, in a bunch of slides covering America and some unidentified Far East country, this slide cropped up, and I thought..."I wonder what the Friends of China Club was, and where was it.

Googling revealed that it was in Taiwan, and may have been owned by Madame Chiang, and used for spying on Westerners.

Hmmm.  Interesting

Church Window

Stained glass window, in a church, cathedral or monastary.

Plain and simple, and no further explanation required.

(Makes a nice wallpaper)

Nana's Ninety !

" Taken at party for
Grandma Vitan  90 yrs
July 5, 1961 "

Well, lets hear it for Grandma Vitan (?). There's a cake on the table, but I'm struggling to read it. Looks like it starts "90th Narozeniny" which is Polish for "90th Birthday" (Assuming my memory of Polish is adequate...)

On The Santa Fe bus

Look after your kids.
They choose your retirement home.

Or in Doris's case, they shove you on a bus and wave bye-bye.

Where did you get that hat ?

Ohmygawd, as those gals from Friends would say.   What an utter car-crash of a slide. I've been staring at this for minutes, and it gets worse every second.

Technically...exposure was way off, and much fiddling produced the so-so scan above.

Composition... not exactly a classic arrangement. Almost meets the "Thirds" rules, but basically just a snap.

Contents... Disturbing. I HOPE that the girl is just dressing up in granny's cast-offs... if she normally wears that, merciless bullying from the other school kids would be expected.   The boy...simpering and toadying like his life depends on it.   But it's THAT painting that clinches it. I'm gonna have nightmares.  I have TEH FEAR !

So bad is this, that I'm going to commemorate it withe first of an occassional feature.... the slide calendar !  Perfect for work or home !

Fluffy White Clouds

over a steel blue sea.

Could be from almost anywhere in the world. (Yes, not the Gobi Desert, Bloomin' Pedants). Thinking back that slides were the ideal way of entertaining neighbours and explaining your holidays...I expect that this is the sort of slide to cause instant catatonic fits.

"Yes, this is the view from the Port Side of our cruise liner as we.....Mr Johnson....Mr Johnson.....Hetty, call an ambulance."

The corn was as high...

... as an elephant's eye!Oh. What a beautiful morning !

Especially, for bird-watching lesbians.  OK, they're probably not lesbians, I'm just being silly.

Palm Beach Pier

Sometimes, even a simple holiday snap can catch my attention. Wilbur is pictured at Palm Beach Pier, just before he heads into the cocktail bar, to drown his sorrows.

Can You Tell What It Is ?

Initially, I struggled. (Must be the drugs.)

Eventually, I noticed the corporate logo, and it all fell into place.

Not usually seen at this time of year...

Mmmm. Travel Food.

Acoma Travel Center Restaurant

What sort of horrible trip do you think the photographer must have had such that an empty, windowless diner was worth a photo?  Admittedly, the set of slides included a few others that looked Pueblo-ish, but this onereally is something special. I suspect that the Acoma in the name refers to Acoma Pueblo.
