The Great Cocaine Glut of 1964

Before the CIA stepped in to control the production, the manufacture of cocaine was uncontrolled, and in times of plenty the supply was enough to send some countries bankrupt as prices dropped.  When this occurred, some areas of Bolivia just dumped the excess in the suburbs, and waited for the autumn rains to wash it away.  This rare slide shows the Hucknall region of La Paz after one of these dumping events.

Well....It's not Inverness

The number of palm trees suggests somewhere a tad warmer. Otherwise, I can give no hints on the city / river / country or even continent.

Simple Faith

What I like about churches - the simple austere faith that tells us that their main interest is the welfare of their community.   With gold.  Lots of gold.  And statues. And exotic garments for the priests etc.

Bonus . Currently feeling like shit. It appears that Strokkur has been transplanted to my bunghole. Ughh.    However, this video did bring a tear to my eye.

Welcome to New Mexico

"Land of Enchantment"

An intriguing slide. I suspect it was taken at the Texas / New Mexico border - in Glenrio, beside the "State Line Bar".
However, the metal plaque is curious. Sure, Glenrio was on Route 66, and R66 was Will Rogers Highway, but I couldn't find any mention of the plaque being in Glenrio. Other plaques look the same, so I have to conclude that the plaques were a common marketting ploy, or the the Glenrio one is migrating towards the sea.

Bonus - Will Rogers was quite a shap cookie, and was famed for his one-liners - eg "Lettin' the cat out of the bag is a lot easier than puttin' it back in."

Bonus - He's also the name behind the ever-interesting Will Rogers phenomenon, after is quip "When the Okies left Oklahoma and moved to California, they raised the average intelligence level in both states."

A Goodfella'

Noticed that Henry Hill died a few days ago, and coincidentally, this slide popped out of the "To Be Scanned" pile.

To me, this chap (from September 1959) has the look of being a legitimate Italian-American Businessman.  So I'll not be disrespecting him. No sirree, no disrespect at all.

Bonus For Arkangel - On June 9, a grand martial arts performance was staged to celebrate China’s seventh Cultural Heritage Day in Tagou Wushu School in central China’s Henan Province.

Ralph

I didn't hold much hope for this slide - it was very VERY faint from fading. However, a quick scan and the face just lit up...tho' only in monochrome.

Written on the slide was "Ralph - Age 3y10m" and a datestamp of " Jan 1951"

Hello Ralph !

Bonus - I'm glad some people have toomuch time on their hands. Especially when "Aliens: The Musical" is the result.

The Decline of America

...illustrated in a single slide.

The mustard coloured cardigan, with provocatively undone buttons.
The sozzled mother, too drunk to stand up.
The laminated wood-effect walls, with pseudo-rococo plastic religous icon.
The exaggerated quiff of the dope-dealing son.

This is a country calling out for God-Fearing Fascism !

Summer Camp at Lake Wobegon

According to the tiny writing on this slide, this slide is of "Jenny at the Lake Wobegon Summer Camp - July 60 -June before the trouble started". I don't think that I need to say more about this.

Bonus - Happiness is a glass half empty. Some interesting stuff about the Museum of Failed Products

Princess For A Day

( Apologies for the poor condition of this particular slide. Ektachrome, plus unsuitable storage locatiom, I would venture.)

On the other hand - gaze upon the excellence of the subject matter. Cardboard and tin-foil crown. Pathetic rubber plant. Pure sixties lamps. Baggy-kneed tights.     Sheer Brilliance !

Bonus - Things I never expected to see - number 131. The Guardian bigging up Prince Charles as a Fashion Icon.

The Art of Camouflague

Camouflage is the art of concealment. The ability not to be seen.

In this slide, there are actually three soldiers, one horse, two tanks, a couple of clowns and a small submarine.

You can not see them, as they are camouflaged. They are actually inside the dustbin which is bottom centre of the picture.

We've booby-trapped that dustbin.  Shall we press the button, children?

Bonus - Makes sense in context.

Summer Swells

For those readers outside of the YooKay, Britain has been suffering from unseasonably* wet weather - more like Autumn Storms that June Zephyrs. So this found slide does seem rather appropriate.

* Much as Brits love complaining about the weather, June is usually quite predictable and pleasant.   Not this year.

Bonus 1 - I rather liked this processed version of the slide.

WALA-TV Brings You...

The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.

Who needs network television when you can have the regional delights of local events.  A quick search on Google reveals
"Sharks, Snapper, Stingray, and much more are coming to the shores as the anglers bring home their prizes for the 78th year of the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.

The rodeo started back in 1929. Local businessmen organized the tournament along with the Alabama State Game and fish commission. Tickets were just five bucks. That covered prizes and also gave you a place to sleep!

The tournament has grown from a nice sized fishing tournament to perhaps the Guinness Record Holder for largest fishing tournament in the world! They are hoping to set that mark this year. More than 100,000 people make the trek to Dauphin Island for the event. Thousands of which participate in the contest"

Thus may, or may not, be of Kentucky, but anyway....not a bad slide really.
