The Man of Mystery

Before Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery, we had Neville Bounds, Suburban Man of Mystery.

Who knows who he really was, and what his interest in cornflake packets was a cover story for.

On Leave from The War

On the one hundredth anniversary of Gavrilo Princip assassinating Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, let's have a WW2 - era slide.

The only info on this slide was "Jack & Elaine, 1943". I wonder what happened to them.

Weed Mercantile Company

Yupp.   That's right.

We're talking about the community of Weed, in Califonia.

And the Weed Mercantile Company is now the Weed Mercantile Mall.  Which is nice.

Ooo Err Missus

What in the name of Swansea is going on here ?

Well.

Perhaps it makes more sense if I tell you it's a sculpture by Puget, and it's in The Louvre, in Paris.

No??

OK. It's Milo di Crotona.

What?   You still don't understand?   Well, I suppose you've not had the benefit of a traditional Scottish Education.

You'd be wise to read about Milo, of Croton, and be amazed at his amazing feats.  It's not just WWE who hype the abilities of wrestlers.

TV Dinners

My work-mates tell me that "All Of Britain" will be gathered around the television screens to watch some fiitball match tonight.

Seems like this evening will be the ideal night to tap-dance my way down the M1 Motorway, wearing a tutu, flippers and a leather trilby.  See you at Junction 24.

Moissac Entombment detail 1485

Amusingly, autocorrect wanted to change that to Moistness Entombment.

Moissac Abbey was a Benedictine and Cluniac monastery in Moissac, Tarn-et-Garonne in south-western France. A number of its medieval buildings survive including the abbey church, which has famous and important Romanesque sculpture around the entrance.

Man Attacked by Babies

So, there I was thinking I should post a slide today. However, it is Father's Day here in the YooKay, and I wanted something slightly appropriate.

And this one looked suitable. A little blurred, but... that statue on the right seemed fitting.

The only info on the slide was "1969", but I'm sure recognise "Man Attacked By Babies" in Vigeland Sculpture Park

Unlucky Alf

Unlucky Alf.

Hit by lightening.  Torpedoed while serving on the USS Boondoggle. Rescued by the USS Fargle, only to have it sink in a kamikaze attack.

Some might call him Lucky Alf.

And more recently, the man who waas photographed holding "something".  Looking closely, I think it might be some sort of tin-plate monkey toy. But your guess is as valid as mine.

Venetian Waters

You might think that it's impossible to take a dull photo in Venice.

Well, it's almost impossible...but here's the proof that it's possible.  Sure it might make an interesting desktop background, but the slide was so under-exposed that the image is too grainy.

Prototype WiFi

Many geeks know about the early days of MicroSoft/Windows and Apple Macs, but few people know the early days of Wi-Fi networking.

This is the earliest attempt at Wi-Fi networking. Tried out in 1945 after development by Tommy Flowers of the Post Office Research Establishment, it attempted to link ENIAC to Colossus. Unfortunately, it was not very successful, a problem traced to interference from a nearby unshielded Microwave oven.
