St Andrews Day

Yes, today is St Andrews Day, Patron Saint of Scotland (and Ukraine, Barbados and Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, if we're being obsessive.)

But today's slide links in with the Scotland connection.

This is the Blue-Billed Water Grouse, the back-up national bird of Scotland.  One interesting fact is that the Blue-Billed Water Grouse cannot, in fact, float.  Instead, they use their 55-inch long legs to stand on the bottom of ponds, and flex their knees to give the illusion of floating.

Wide Open Spaces

Yes, that's a bit of an understatement.

A whole shoot-load of nothing.

Possibly USA. Maybe Canada.

Not likely to be Hong Kong.

Blankets, Baby Boy and Bertha

There's a lot of slides of this lady and her baby boy (Yes, definitely a boy based upon the bath-time photos), and this seemed appropriate for a lazy Sunday morning.

As an aside, 1971 was a time before duvets, or "Continental Quilts".  Blankets, sheets and suchlike ruled the day.

Bonus -When did duvets arrive in UK?

Bonus 2 -  Pallas's Cat uses tail to keep feet warm.

A Sharp and Clear Morning

Slide collecting isn't just about crappy weddings, funny looking people, tedious churches and Fish Parades (tho' much of it is.)

It's sometimes about find rather pleasing slides.

A crisp morning, while out walking the dog, and luckily the unknown photographer sees this view and thinks "I like that!"   Well, I like it too.

Welcome to Black Friday

For Black Friday, I toyed with the idea of just posting a un-exposed slide as a prank.
But that would be unethical. And un-funny.

So, today's  slide comes from the "Sid's Wedding" selection, where they were all massively underexposed. As you can see.
The big image is the "As Scanned" image, which will even include a little bit of the scanner trying to correct the darkness.
Alas, even serious tweaking of the brightness / contrast / curve achieves little. (Small image.)

Bonus - Can you imagine the Black Mood of the bride, upon seeing this was the only record of her wedding. :-D

Thanksgiving with Grumpy George

Sorry Martha. Someone has to sit next to grumpy old Uncle George. Maybe hell tell you some of his war stories, and really give you something to be grateful for.

(Not) A Stock Image

An odd title, but it does make sense. This slide is of a classic old Colonial Style cottage, possibly in New England.

But in search for possible real life locations, I found that this cottage is the subject of a Stock Image in a library (see little picture).  And used in at least one advert/webpage.

Bonus - 59 years ago...Zapruder in 4K

It's a stock image subject.

It Could Only Be France

There are some images that you only need to look at for a couple of seconds, and just know that it's France.

This is one of them.

Sensible Ladies' Fashions

Americans sure do love a parade.

This slide, from October 1958, seems to be a float for Giesel's / Ziesel's / Fiesel's department store, and features some sensible, well tailored outfits. Very Classy.

Bonus -  No message, just likes the image.

For The Freshest Meat.... Marple's Farm,

Mrs Edith Raincoat, of Doncaster decided that a nice bit of veal would be "Reet Nice" for her husbands meal tonight.

So, off to Marple's Farm to select her ideal donor.  Fresh and local...just like the people want.

Al-Fresco Dining

Alas, mid to late November is not the right time for al-fresco dining.

Luckily, it appears that Thelma and Dixie were photographed during a summer, many decades ago, and are classy enough to avoid using plastic cutlery.

Nice.

Architectural Guesswork

As per usual, no info on this slide, but that gives me a chance for guesswork and supposition.

Italian is my guess.

Probably some sort of monastery.

Hopefully, someone will comment with more info.

Might be unfair to class this as suitable for Tedious Tuesday.

It Takes A Nation To Hold Us Back

I know nothing about this slide (location, event) other than it was processed in May 1979.

However, I like to think that it was some big protest that lead to the overthrow of a dictator or corrupt region.  Maybe in Alabama. :-D

Bonus -  A 'fatberg' in the sewers? What a waste

Bonus 2 - A llama in a lobster costume, that is all...

The Floating Market

There are probably hundreds of tourists photos which are very vert similar to this.

There are probably hundreds of tourists who have told friends and neighbours that they really wish they had this rather that Tesco or Waitrose.

Those tourists are, of course, lying. A quick dose of typhoid or cholera, and they'd be screaming for safe, reliable Sainsburys.

Guizers - "Penny For The Guy?"

After a truly astonishing response to yesterday's slide, with very nearly one message, I think  it's time for another Half-Frame slide.

Today's ... it's a bit mysterious.

The main characters look like Guizers, out on a Penny For The Guy campaign, raising money for fireworks on Guy Fawkes night.

But, the weather seams too damned good for early November.

So, I'm open to suggestions. The slide was processed in March 1976, but that doesn't mean that the picture was taken in March 1976.

Love Beside A Renault 12

When people think of fashions of 1976, they usually think of the outrageous fashions of Vivienne Westwood, or the lurex and spandex of the Discotheque.

People just don't think of chunky knit sweaters and simple cotton dresses.

But Charlie and Rosey do.

Oh... the Black Border?   This slide was a half-frame slide, and this crop seemed appropriate.

Bonus - 20 Years ago (on 4th Nov) MC Hoky released his only album, and this was the lead single.

Possibly Venice

This slide is giving me definite Venice-vibes, but ... I'm not going to spend much time trying to prove/disprove my theory.

It also seems incongruous to have an image of Venice on "Tedious Tuesday", but ... it does rather belong here.

If Looks Could Kill....

The morning after the night before, and Mrs Miggins does not being photographed, in bed, in a man's pajamas, while her husband is on a 8-month tour of duty on HMS Vengeance.

Of course, it was entirely innocent, but at at that moment.... like six out of seven dwarves, she was not happy.

Pretty as a Picture

I know that today I should be posting slides features Bonfire and Fireworks, but .... to Heck Hith That.

Instead...this most pleasant scene.  No info on the slide, but based upon a hunch, I'm saying that this almost certainly Polperro Harbour

More ... Folk Dancing

A slide labelled as "Oct 81 Yugoslavia Dubrovnik".

I believe that these dancers are dancing the Tradicionalni ples tajanstvenog električnog ormara, which translates as "Traditional Dance of the Mysterious Electricity Cupboard".

You can see the mysterious cupboard that houses the electric meter on the right of the stage.

Bonus - Yes, we have another suspect as the infamous Zodiac Killer.

Seegfrörni 1963

Not a word I was aware of previously.

That is Swiss German for the great lake freeze of 1963.

During the winter of 1962/1963 it was so cold in Switzerland that Lake Zurich froze over! In Swiss German this phenomenon is called 'Seegfrörni' which simply means 'freezing over of a lake'. For a lake as big as Lake Zurich (about 88 km2 and 136m deep) that's pretty impressive.

Googling didn't seem to find anything on this artwork, tho Ice Yachts were definitely used during Seegfrörni 1963

Oxford, City of Dreaming Spires

Oxford is the county town of Oxfordshire and famous worldwide for its prestigious university, the oldest in the English-speaking world. In his poem ‘Thyrsis’ the Victorian poet Matthew Arnold called Oxford ‘the city of dreaming spires’ after the stunning architecture of these university buildings.

Two rivers run through Oxford, the Cherwell and the Thames (Isis), and it is from this riverside situation that Oxford got its name in Saxon times, ‘Oxenaforda’ or ‘Ford of the Oxen’. In the 10th century Oxford became an important frontier town between the kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex and was also strategically important to the Normans who in 1071 built a castle there, first in timber and later in the 11th century, in stone.

Not the Nun's Exercise Yard at the St Blodwynn's Cathedral

It seems that I have been wrongly informed. This is not the secret Not the Nun's Exercise Yard at the St Blodwynn's Cathedral atop Snowdon.

It is, in fact, the Brunnenhof (Fountain Courtyard), one of the ten courtyards at Munich Residenz, the former royal palace of the Wittelsbach monarchs of Bavaria.

Albeit, with the famous fountains boarded over due to an outbreak of the Lurghi.
