Jerichau NY Carlsberg

The above was written on the slide.

So, my first thought (obviously) was that this was a sculpture in New York, by the french artist Jerichau.

But no, I believe that its a portrait of Jens Adolph Jerichau, the Danish Sculptor. The statue is outside the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, the Art Gallery in Copenhagen.

Wow, almost an embarrassing mistake.

Bonus - OMG.I'm almost speechless on seeing this car.

No More Solo Dining...

The Coronavirus Lockdown has been an intensely lonely experience, even for a introvert, with all meals being essentially...me.   A occasional visit from my animal housemate Reg, but he's not really much company really.

However, today... visiting for food with chums. Yay !

Oh Little Town of Plackton

Today, we have a slide of Plackton, in it's original Nottingham shire Riviera location. Two years later, it was moved to its current location.

One interesting fact about Plackton in the Middle Ages.  Thanks to a mis-reading of the bible, the local church that the order of numbers were 1 ... 2 ... 3 ... 6 ... 5 .... 4 ... 7 .... 8 .... etc.  And the numbering stuck.  Children were taught by rote "One times Two is Two,   Two times Two is Six,   Three times  Two is Four,  Six times Two is Eight." and so on.

This local foible lasted for years, and no educated person would ever visit Plackton, but with the arrival of the M64 in the 1850's, confusion reigned, and slowly The Plackton System died out.  Interesting fact.

Under The Dock

Actually, I like this slide.

I don't know what it is about the slide that I like (possibly the cool calmness of it) but it just appeals to me.

Speaking of Docks,

Meanwhile, Just Off The Coast of Zanzibar...

A small flotilla (nice word) of tramp steamers, pleasure craft, dredgers and 60-man canoes assemble, awaiting the chance to invade.

A slightly unusual photo from HMNZS Achoo, but one that is no better than the traditional "view of the sea and sky, with a squint horizon" slide that we usually see.

A Perfect Father's Day

In most of the world, today, the third Sunday in June is Father's Day, so today's slide honours fathers everywhere.

Mr Brian Coldicott, of Nu Joisey, is celebrating the day in his favourite hammock (he has eight to chose from) and is awaiting his third beer of the afternoon.   We salute you Brian.

Where The Big Nobs Hang Out

This is, I believe, Monaco  - the Place de Palais, to be exact.  The Prince's Palace of Monaco is the official residence of the Sovereign Prince of Monaco. Built in 1191 as a Genoese fortress, during its long and often dramatic history it has been bombarded and besieged by many foreign powers. Since the end of the 13th century, it has been the stronghold and home of the Grimaldi family who first captured it in 1297.

Fact - Almost 30% of the population of Monaco was a millionaire in 2014, similar to Zurich or Geneva.

A Collection Of Cute Cows.

I've actually spent most of today trying to decide if image is true, or if when I scanned it from the wrong side, effectively mirror-imaging it.

Ultimately, I decided that it didn't matter one jot. Them cows are long gone.

Little Pocahontas

I'm sure that nowadays, such a bit will provoke an outcry of Cultural Misappropriation, and the inevitable Daily Mail backlash - "You won'y believe what they're banning next."

Sigh.

The Headless Handler

I'd like to pretend that the omission of this fellows head from the picture is a deliberate act, relating to the House Un-American Act hearings of the mid 1950s, but.... no.

Just a photographer more interested in Billy-Bob, and Bobby-Bill : a pair of Nairnshire Collies.  They're the best breed for herding Yaks.

Bikini and Necklace

I was going to entitle this post as "Dirty - Girl on Beach", based upon the dirty condition of the slide, but, alas, I thought might attract the wrong sort of visitor.

I really like this slide, and I like the retro bikini style that she has - obviously, the outfit would not suit me, but I can admire it.

Bonus - In studies of people isolated in submarines, space stations or polar bunkers, researchers have found there appears to be an inflection point where the frustration and hardship of being cooped up inside gets suddenly harder to bear. […] there was panic buying and confusion, and then a “honeymoon period” when it felt novel and different to stay at home. “People are now saying they’re feeling really lonely,” Dr Norris said. In the psychological study of extreme confinement and isolation, this is known as the ‘third-quarter phenomenon’.  More

Journey's End.

If you had selected "Denmark" in the "Where is today's slide from?" quiz, then you may have believed that you won the £45.00 Jackpot. I mean...that flag... Danish, innit.

Alas, this is St. Jacobs Kyrka, in Stockholm.

Mein Host

Your genial host tonight is ... this bloke.

I often try to work out when a slide location is.  Often, I fail.

Here, the presence of Llandudno Round Table and Willenhall Round Table pennant gives a hint. And the bar tap of Border Brewery (with a Red Dragon logo) all points to Norfolk.

No, Wrexham area, I meant to say.

Bonus : I'm trying to resist the hype regarding George Floyd, but ...  Minneapolis Police slashing the tyres of protesters.
You can think of an appropriate interjection here.

The Looms of Rochdale

A slide of of "Old Rosie", the most famous Cross-Weft, triple-ply Overlocking Loom in the world.

Ragged Street Urchins

A Trio of Cheeky Urchins, which judging by fashions in other slides in the box, date from the early 1950's.

I've always been intrigued by the apparent non-connection between Street Urchins and Sea Urchins. However, the connection is Hedgehogs.Obviously.

No, Not Me !

This bloke. Mr Henry Crump. Chief Executive Officer of Bothwick Baths inc.

Here he  is with Chief Accountant Albert Albertson, and Secretary / PA / Model for the enamel bath range - Mrs Edith Scronk.

The original slide had an overpowered red cast , but it looks OK as a sepia tinted slide.

Bonus.  UK has 40,000 Coronavirus deaths, the economy is tanked, and prospects are bleak.   We need something to make us laugh.

The Dolph Hotel

Most folk assume that this is a 1970's slide of the Dolphin Hotel in Southampton, and most folk are almost right.

This is actually The Dolph Hotel, which was named in 1767 for the yet-to-be-born actor Dolph Lundgren. As your'll see from the comparable view from Google, things don't change much in Southampton

Interesting, no?

Bonus 1 - Rock Climbing Ping Pong

Travelling Into The Past

Not a great slide, in terms of photographic quality or condition, but very evocative of the time.

Would be an interesting CD Cover for, oh, some Ska-Polka-Death Metal combo.

Bonus - I got a new pair of gloves today, but they’re both ‘lefts,’ which on the one hand is great, but on the other, it’s just not right.

Bonus 2 -
