Dead Crocodile Clough

In Geographic terms, a "clough" is a name for a steep-sided valley in northern England.

Dead Crocodile Clough is shown here and is located on the eastern slopes of Bleaklow.

You're probably wondering about the name... which stems from local peat-cutters Jacob Brindstone and Charlton Feeney who discovered a dead crocodile in this clough in 1765. They sold it to the Duke of Ashbourne for 3/-, and the reptile was displayed at Hardon Hall.

Where it came from is unknown to this day.
